Sports- and recreation-related injuries make up a significant proportion of unintentional injuries for children and youth up to age 19. In fact, 40% of child and youth injuries treated in Canadian emergency departments are sport and recreation related. While the Government of Canada encourages Canada?s children and youth to become more active and live healthy lifestyles, it is also important they are safe while being active.

Through the Public Health Agency of Canada?s?Active and Safe?injury prevention initiative, the Government of Canada is investing $5 million over two years to support a number of community-based projects that empower Canadians to make safe choices when they get involved in sports and recreational activities. Today?s announcement of nearly $200,000 will support a project that enhances skills, knowledge and attitudes of children and youth, known as physical literacy, so they can be active and safe while participating in sports and recreational activities.

Active and Safe for Life ? Physical Literacy Project

This project will be led by Canadian Sport for Life, with support from Canadian Sport Centre Pacific in partnership with Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, Physical & Health Education Canada, Lakehead University, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the Play Safe Initiative, Respect Group Inc., the Sandbox Project, the BC Sport Agency and Sport Newfoundland and Labrador.

Project activities include:

• integrating injury prevention messaging into physical literacy materials previously developed by these organizations;
• facilitating the adoption of recommendations for the appropriate use of sport equipment and facilities for 30 sports; and
• reviewing the rules of play in four sports (soccer, lacrosse, rugby and baseball) to increase injury prevention awareness and promotion.

At the women's event, Mrs. Romney offered her husband as "the one person who is going to turn this country around," and promised that her husband would keep in mind the needs of women and families, if elected. Later, she attended a Latino Coalition lunch, where son Craig addressed guests in Spanish, and described his father as "a man you can trust."

Mrs. Romney told the Latino crowd that Democrats try to make it look like Republicans "don't care about this community. That's not true. We very much care about this community."

Latinos, she said, "are mistaken if they think they are going to be better off" if President Barack Obama wins re-election, she said.

He acknowledged having a stricter anti-abortion stance than Romney, but said he's comfortable with the GOP nominee's position "because it's a vast improvement on the status quo."

Rubio, interviewed on "CBS This Morning," held out Ryan as a serious policy thinker who's "going to have a bunch of new fans across this country" after he speaks.

Obama's re-election campaign released an online video casting Ryan, who is hugely popular with conservatives, as a politician from a "bygone era" whose budget proposals threaten Medicare and would gut funding for Planned Parenthood.

A poll by the Pew Research Center and The Washington Post found Americans deeply divided about Ryan, whom they described as conservative, intelligent, fake, phony.

Romney's nomination now official, he was free at last to start dipping into his general-election pot of campaign cash.

"We're excited that now he's going to be able to spend money, both in English and in Spanish, to explain to people how his policies will help grow the economy, help small business, help people have the confidence to invest in the future," Rubio said."

Opinion polls, however, show Obama getting high marks on national security after ending the war in Iraq, drawing down the conflict in Afghanistan and ordering the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

Romney made his debut at the convention two days before his own speech, rousing the crowd into cheers as he took the stage briefly to share a kiss with his wife after she spoke. Ann Romney's prime-time speech was in large measure an outreach to female voters as she declared her husband "will not let us down" if elected president.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, dismissing GOP attempts to woo Hispanic voters, said: "You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate." He added, "This is a party with a platform that calls for the self-deportation of 11 million people."

Hispanics strongly favor Obama, according to public polls, and Romney and his party have been seeking to win a bigger share of their votes by emphasizing proposals to fix the economy rather than ease their positions on immigration.

Polls find the economy is overwhelmingly the dominant issue in the race and voters narrowly favor Romney to handle it. New device to remove stroke-causing blood clots proves better than standard tool

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and a common cause of long-term disability in the United States, but doctors have very few proven treatment methods. Now a new device that mechanically removes stroke-causing clots from the brain is being hailed as a game-changer.

In a recent clinical trial, the SOLITAIRE Flow Restoration Device dramatically outperformed the standard mechanical treatment. Findings from the trial, called SOLITAIRE With the Intention for Thrombectomy (SWIFT), are published online August 26 in the journal The Lancet and will also appear in a later print edition of the journal.

SOLITAIRE, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March, is among an entirely new generation of devices designed to remove blood clots from blocked brain arteries in patients experiencing an ischemic stroke. It has a self-expanding, stent-like design, and once inserted into a blocked artery using a thin catheter tube, it compresses and traps the clot. The clot is then removed by withdrawing the device, reopening the blocked blood vessel.

"This new device is significantly changing the way we can treat ischemic stroke," said the study's lead author, Dr. Jeffrey L. Saver, director of the UCLA Stroke Center and a professor of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "We are going from our first generation of clot-removing procedures, which were only moderately good in reopening target arteries, to now having a highly effective tool."

Results of the study showed that the device opened blocked vessels without causing symptomatic bleeding in or around the brain in 61 percent of patients. The standard FDA-approved mechanical device -- a corkscrew-type clot remover called the MERCI Retriever -- was effective in 24 percent of cases. The use of SOLITAIRE also led to better survival three months after a stroke. There was a 17.2 percent mortality rate with the new device, compared with a 38.2 percent rate with the older one.

About 87 percent of all strokes are caused by blood clots blocking a blood vessel supplying the brain. The stroke treatment that has received the most study is an FDA-approved clot-busting drug known as tissue plasminogen activator, but this drug must be given within four-and-a-half hours of the onset of stroke symptoms, and even more quickly in older patients.

When clot-busting drugs cannot be used or are ineffective, the clot can sometimes be mechanically removed during, or beyond, the four-and-a-half-hour window. The current study, however, did not compare mechanical clot removal to drug treatment.

For the trial, researchers randomly assigned 113 stroke patients at 18 hospitals to receive either SOLITAIRE or MERCI therapy within eight hours of stroke onset, between January 2010 and February 2011. The patients' average age was 67, and 68 percent were male. The time from the beginning of stroke symptoms to the start of the clot-retriever treatment averaged 5.1 hours. Forty percent of the patients had not improved with standard clot-busting medication prior to the study, while the remainder had not received it.

At the suggestion of a safety monitoring committee, the trial was ended nearly a year earlier than planned due to significantly better outcomes with the experimental device.

Other statistically significant findings included:

? 2 percent of SOLITAIRE-treated patients had symptoms of bleeding in the brain, compared with 11 percent of MERCI patients.

? At the 90-day follow-up, overall adverse event rates, including bleeding in the brain, were similar for the two devices.

? 58 percent of SOLITAIRE-treated patients had good mental/motor functioning at 90 days, compared with 33 percent of MERCI patients.

? The SOLITARE device also opened more vessels when used as the first treatment approach, necessitating fewer subsequent attempts with other devices or drugs.

Earlier this week, the UFC light heavyweight champion forced the cancellation of next Saturday?s UFC 151 event. After his title challenger, Dan Henderson, partially tore his MCL, UFC president Dana White offered the champ a fight with Chael Sonnen, who offered to step into the main event spot.

This despite moving up a weight class, not training and coming off a fight just last month. Remember, he was knocked out by middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

But Jones, who is the brother of Patriots first round pick Chandler Jones, selfishly declined.

?This is probably one of my all-time lows as being president of UFC,? White said. ?Dan Henderson tried to train, he continued to work out and saw a doctor, but there was nothing we could do to save that fight.

?But Chael Sonnen stepped up accepted the fight with Jon Jones last night. As of 8 p.m. (Wednesday), we thought we had a fight fans would love to see. Then at about 9 p.m. the one thing I never thought would happen in a million years happened. Jon Jones said, ?I won?t fight Chael Sonnen on eight days notice.? That has never happened in the history of the UFC, a guy who is a champion, and a guy who is supposed to be one of the best fighters in the world, pound-for-pound, refuses to fight.?

Chael Sonnen is the best politician in sports ? no, really, he ran for Congress in 2010 ? and anything Sonnen does, he does it for Sonnen. He?d be saving the show for sure, but he?d also be getting a nice ?thank you? payday from White, and a shot at arguably one of the best pound-for-pound fighters ? and now I must use that term lightly ? in the sport.

Sonnen fought last month. Sonnen, unlike Jones, has not been through a training camp and likely isn?t in fight shape. Sonnen would be moving up to fight a heavier fighter.

?Chael is just coming up from 185 pounds,? White said. ?He said that not only would he face Jones in eight days, he?d jump in a plane to Vegas and fight him that night if he was asked to. Jon Jones said, ?I?m not fighting Chael Sonnen with eight days notice.? Jones? trainer, Greg Jackson, told Jon that taking the fight with Chael would be the biggest mistake of his life. That?s what he told Jon Jones. Let me tell you, this guy (Greg Jackson) is a sport killer.

?When you are a champion, much less one of the guys who is supposed to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, you are supposed to step up. Jon Jones is a guy a lot of fans don?t like, and I don?t think this is going to make him any more popular. Lorenzo Fertitta (UFC chairman and CEO) and I are disgusted with Jon Jones and Greg Jackson.?

The real victims of Jones? selfishness is the fighters on the undercard. UFC fighters aren?t millionaires. Far from it. An average fighter fights three times per year, and some of those guys get paid about $12,000 per fight.

That?s $36,000 per year (minus sponsors), with management and trainers taking a cut of that.

Jones, who earns well into the six-figures for fights and probably closes in on much more with sponsors, just cost those fighters a paycheck, which they might only get three times per year.

And with no fight to show off company logos, my guess is their sponsors won?t be cutting any checks either.

Undercard fighters reacted harshly on Twitter in the moments after White?s announcement. Who could blame them?

Jeff Hougland sent a message to Jones, through Twitter that read, ?Can I at least get one of your new Nike T-shirts? I?ll give it to my kid since I won?t have any money for her school clothes.?

Ken Shamrock accidentally scores a knockout

Former UFC champ Ken Shamrock is nicknamed the "World's Most Dangerous Man," and he proved this title while in a mall in California. TMZ reports Shamrock reportedly hit a woman while trying to break up a fight.

While sitting at a mall in Modesto, Calif., he saw two women involved in a fight. He jumped in to try to separate them, when another person jumped on his back. He threw the back-jumper to the ground and threw a knockout punch, earning his first knockout since 2004.

It wasn't until she was out that Shamrock and the crowd yelled at him that he saw he had knocked out a woman. Though a report was taken, the police told TMZ they most likely won't press charges because Shamrock was acting in self-defense.

Shamrock's rep notes, "Outside the ring, Ken is not a violent man ... and was only trying to do the right thing."

Inside the ring, Shamrock's last fight was in November of 2010. He lost in a TKO due to leg injury. His last UFC fight was a 2006 loss to Tito Ortiz, an ending to their longstanding rivalry. Shamrock's career spanned 17 years and included wins in PRIDE, Pancrase and the UFC.

Navistar International Corp. and Chinese truck maker Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co. Ltd. announced that the two companies have received formal approval from the Chinese government to move forward with their commercial engine joint venture.

The joint venture will focus on meeting the emerging needs of the Chinese commercial truck market by providing JAC with access to Navistar's Euro IV and Euro V compliant technology. The joint venture also sets the stage for global export opportunities of JAC's light-, medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks.

"Our partnership with Navistar will bring cutting-edge diesel and commercial truck technology to our customers, as we deliver on our mission to make better products while we build a better society," said An Jin, chairman, JAC.

Navistar and JAC signed their joint venture agreements in September 2010 and since that time the companies have been setting things in motion for a launch upon formal government approval. Navistar has established a central China office in Shanghai, as well as satellite offices in Beijing and Hefei with a team of Chinese nationals and U.S. and Brazilian employees who work closely with their JAC counterparts, gaining insight and understanding of the Chinese market.

In Hefei, product development engineers from both companies have been collaborating on engine and vehicle design. Additionally, construction has started on a machining and assembly facility, research and development center, and administrative offices in Hefei to support the new venture.

The engine joint venture represents the first phase of global collaboration between Navistar and JAC. The companies plan to formally submit their commercial truck joint venture application to the Chinese government later this fall. In addition, earlier this spring the two companies signed letters of intent to collaborate on design and production of light-duty commercial truck export opportunities for Navistar dealers in Brazil and Mexico.

The products slated for the joint venture include Navistar's MaxxForce 3.2, 4.8, 7.2 and JAC's 2.8 4DA1 liter engines.
