The tablet-based interface allows students, teachers, principals and parents to communicate in real time, creating a new frontier in the education realm. Everything that is needed for classroom management, student learning, administrative tools and parental monitoring is housed in one central application ? an all-inclusive square box.

The tablets are lower in price than competitors such as Apple and Samsung, and the tablets are Flash-enabled. The 1sqbox educational software alone is also available for use on other computer hardware. 1sqbox's Granville and Coates were recently honored by The Daily Record as "Innovators of the Year" for 2012.

1sqbox is currently making its latest innovations available to school systems around the world. Report: True Impact of Foundation Investments Revealed, Fuels ...

News release

Washington, D.C. - Foundation investments have a deeper and farther-reaching?economic impact in America's communities than previously understood, according to new independent research released by The Philanthropic Collaborative.?The first-of-its-kind analysis shows that foundation grantmaking supports millions of jobs, as well as billions of dollars in wages, GDP and tax revenues that extend for generations.?

The report, Economic Impacts of 2010 Foundation Grantmaking on the U.S. Economy, comes?at a critical time. Congress and the White House are debating the role of the sector and considering caps or limits on incentives that encourage charitable giving.?The report examines?the present and future impact on the U.S. economy of foundation grantmaking, which supports diverse areas such as health care, scientific research, educational opportunities, safer neighborhoods and more.

"Although public and elected officials may be familiar with specific foundation-supported charitable organizations, the broader importance of the sector to our society and the size of its impact are less well known,"?said John Tyler, chair of The Philanthropic Collaborative?and general counsel and secretary of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. "Fortunately, appreciation is growing for the far-reaching effect that foundations and charitable giving have in our communities. That is a good trend, but there is more to be done."

The study examines how foundation grants within the U.S. in 2010 ($37.85 billion) contribute to immediate and short-term job creation and wages, GDP and tax revenues. But the study goes a step further to reveal the longer-term, more substantial impacts that are difficult to measure. Using return on investment data and the well-established IMPLAN economic model, the study examines the broader impact and benefits that these investments are likely to have for grantees and in communities for decades to come.

The report reveals that the impacts of foundation grantmaking in America are vast:

Millions of jobs created

  • Nearly 500,000 jobs are created immediately following disbursement of foundation grants, expanding within about a year to nearly 1 million jobs once the grants flow through the economy.
  • At least 8.8 million jobs over the long-term. In the subsequent years after foundation investments are made, impacts build that span a generation and beyond. For example, a foundation grant to support an early childhood education initiative increases the likelihood that more young people will go to college, improve their lifetime earnings and improve their quality of life.

Billions of dollars in long-term economic activity??

Billions of dollars in long-term economic activity?

  • Nearly $970 billion in goods and services transactions are generated, and more than $570 billion to America's GDP based on long-term return on investment and economic multipliers.

"Foundation investments set off a cascade of benefits in our communities over the course of decades," said Steven?Peterson, clinical assistant professor of economics at the University of Idaho and lead author of the report.?"We now have a stronger understanding of the link between the short- and long-term impact of foundation grants and their significant contribution to economic growth."

Foundations support almost nine million jobs in America, and the nonprofit community as a whole employs more than 13.5 million people, or approximately 10 percent of the workforce.?Nonprofits pay nearly?$670 billion annually in wages and benefits,?and employ more people than the finance, insurance and real estate sectors combined.

Sony Xperia Z promo videos highlight the display, water resistance and more

Sony unveiled the Xperia Z during CES 2013. The company was really pushing the water-resistance of the device during the show and it looks like that trend is being continued. Thankfully though, that is not all that Sony is showing off in regards to the Xperia Z. In fact, the company has been releasing Xperia Z promo videos on their YouTube channel.

XPERIA-Z-ZL-12-androidcommunity-540x447

The channel has a few vides that have been posted over the past few days. They include a look at (you guessed it) the water-resistance as well as the display and battery life management. There are also two videos that highlight the phone as a whole. That being said, lets kick things off with the water-resistance video (which can be seen below). Many have seen this before, in-fact we touching on this feature in our hands-on video. The key facts, the Xperia Z will be able to handle some rain as well as a drop in water such as a pool, bathtub or toilet. The handset can be submerged in up to 3.3 feet of water and will be ok with up to 30 minutes of submersion time.

The next video shows off the screen technology, which in this case means a handset with a BRAVIA Reality Display which Sony touts as bringing ?the best combination of luminance, resolution and color gamut.? More to the point here, Sony believes the display on the Xperia Z will be able to replicate the colors that we have in our memories. The screen technology video can be seen below.

The battery life topic is always hot. Mostly because smartphones never seem to have enough battery life. Sony makes the comparison to some real-world items such as turning the lights off when you leave home and the fridge saving power by having the light off when the door is closed. Basically, Sony has introduced a battery Stamina Mode which will turn off functions you don?t need when the phone is in standby mode. This can be customized based on app, however once you leave standby mode, all functions come back to normal. Sony has said that by using Stamina Mode, you will be able to increase you standby time by up to four times.

India gang rape spurs national dialogue

An Indian woman who was the victim of a gang rape and brutal beating earlier this month in New Delhi has been flown to Singapore for treatment, while the rest of India debates women's safety.

By Shivam Vij,?Contributor / December 27, 2012

Indian protesters listen to a speaker during a protest against a recent gang rape of a young woman in a moving bus in New Delhi, India, Thursday. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged Thursday to take action to protect the nation's women while the young rape victim was flown to Singapore for treatment of severe internal injuries.

The Indian government?s crackdown on the anti-rape protests that have continued for nearly two weeks in New Delhi has only aggravated public anger and concern about women?s safety.?

The protests were sparked by the gang rape and brutal assault of a 23-year-old student on a bus in the elite South Delhi district on Dec. 16.?

As the girl battles for her life in a Singapore hospital, Indians are debating how to make the country safer for women. Ten days after the incident, it dominates newspaper headlines and op-ed pages, pushing to the margins stories like the retirement of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, the popular Indian sportsperson, highlighting just how much the case has affected people.

Sexual harassment is rampant in India, and the public has been largely apathetic to women?s plight, but many are hoping the attack could be a turning point in the way India treats women.

Calls for capital punishment, including the chemical castration of rapists, have died down, with various women?s groups decrying them. Given that in 94 percent of rape cases the rapist is known to the victim, Nilanjana S. Roy, writing in The Hindu newspaper she wonders if the protestors would be okay with death penalty if it were their father, uncle, neighbors, or even if it meant convicting Indian security forces in conflict zones. ?

The Monitor reported that India is considering a fast-track court process to expedite rape cases and step up punishment for sexual violence on the heels of the bus rape incident.?

Beyond the law, what needs to happen, writes Shilpa Phadke, author of a book on women?s safety in Mumbai, has to do with how Indians use their streets: ?We are safer when there are more women (and more men) on the streets. When shops are open, when restaurants are open, when there are hawkers and yes, even sex workers on the street, the street is a safer space for us all.?

The outrage that this case has spurred might finally bring about a cultural change in India, Stephanie Nolen of The Globe and Mail suggests in a report:?

Syria's U.N. envoy calls Aleppo attack "a cowardly terrorist act"

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Syria's U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari described as "a cowardly terrorist act" an attack on Tuesday that killed scores of students sitting for exams at Aleppo University in Syria's biggest city.

"This act killed 82 students and wounded 162 other students," he told the U.N. Security Council during a debate on counterterrorism. "A cowardly terrorist act targeted the students of Aleppo University."

A Syrian opposition group put the death toll from the two explosions that rocked the university at 83.

The cause of the explosions was not clear but the Syrian government and opposition activists blamed each other.

"The terrorist armed groups in my country always take advantage of a Security Council meeting to perpetrate a terrorist attack inside Syria and this is indeed what happened today perhaps for the 10th or 20th time since the crisis in my country began," Ja'afari told the 15-nation council.

According to the United Nations, more than 60,000 people have been killed during a 22-month-old revolt against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which began with peaceful protests but turned violent after Assad's forces tried to crush the demonstrations.

U.N. special envoy for Children and Armed Conflict, Leila Zerrougui, said more than 20 children had been killed and many injured during the past few days in air strikes and other attacks on populated areas in and around Damascus.

"Children pay a very high price in the ongoing fighting. All parties must immediately refrain from targeting civilian areas and take all necessary precautions to protect girls and boys," she said in a statement.

In a letter to the Security Council and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, dated January 9 and released on Tuesday, Ja'afari outlined details of a peace plan put forward by Assad in a speech earlier this month.

Although Assad's speech appeared to dismiss peace talks with his enemies and was rejected by opposition groups, Ja'afari wrote that the government was prepared to enter a national dialogue in a bid to resolve the crisis.

In preparation for such a dialogue, Ja'fari said all countries in the region should stop funding, arming and harboring rebels, while all combatants - government forces and rebel fighters - should adhere to a ceasefire.

He also said "guarantees will be offered to Syrian opposition groups in order that they might enter the country, without conditions, to participate in the national dialogue."

More than 50 countries asked the Security Council on Monday to refer the Syria crisis to the International Criminal Court, which prosecutes people for genocide and war crimes. But Russia - Assad's long-standing ally and a major arms supplier - blocked the initiative, calling it "ill-timed and counterproductive.
