Orbital Sciences Corp. raised the first fully integrated Antares rocket on its Virginia launch pad on Saturday, setting the stage for its maiden flight to orbit later this month. A successful test launch would mark a giant leap toward using the Antares and Orbital's Cygnus cargo capsule to resupply the International Space Station.
If the current schedule holds, Virginia-based Orbital would become the second commercial venture to send its spacecraft to the space station later this year, following in the footsteps of California-based SpaceX. The two companies have received more than hundred of millions of dollars in development funding from NASA under the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program, or COTS.
SpaceX completed its COTS testing last year and has moved on to a series of 12 station resupply missions under the terms of a $1.6 billion contract. The second such mission, making use of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon cargo capsule, was successfully conducted last month.
This month's demonstration flight by the Antares will mark a major milestone in Orbital's COTS effort: Components of the rocket have been tested on the ground, but not yet in outer space. On Saturday, the two-stage rocket was rolled out from its integration facility at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia and transported to Launch Pad 0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport, a mile away. The Antares was then erected on the pad, where it will undergo a series of pre-launch tests.

Liftoff is scheduled for no earlier than April 17. The first flight won't go to the space station, but will merely test the rocket's ability to put a dummy payload in space.??A demonstration flight of the Antares and Cygnus is slated to go to the space station later this year. If that unmanned demonstration mission is completed successfully, Orbital will begin conducting eight cargo resupply flights to the station in accordance with a $1.9 billion contract.
NASA selected SpaceX and Orbital to help fill the resupply gap left by the retirement of the space shuttle fleet in 2011. The station is also being resupplied by robotic Russian cargo capsules as well as European and Japanese transports. A separate NASA program is providing $1.1 billion in support to SpaceX, the Boeing Co. and Sierra Nevada Corp. for the development of crew-capable spaceships.

A cup of coffee or tea is a crucial morning ritual for many Americans. Now a new line of?caffeinated?gum is?promising?to sooth?commuters?on the run but is also raising?concerns?among health?experts about the proliferation of such products.
Last month Wrigley announced they were introducing a caffeine-infused gum, called Alert Energy Gum.
With 40 mg of caffeine in every stick of gum, the Alert Energy Gum has the same amount of caffeine as approximately half a cup of coffee.
?This is something [consumers] can take with them and something that?s a little bit discrete,? said Jennifer Jackson-Luth, a Wrigley spokeswoman. ?It can fit in their pocket.?
In recent years caffeine has appeared in a wide array of products from lollipops to bottled water to shower soap. However, the rise of highly caffeinated products has raised concerns about the health risks, especially in energy drinks where caffeine doses can reach up to hundreds of milligrams per can.
Earlier this month a group of 18 doctors and public health experts petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to protect children and teens from highly caffeinated energy drinks, writing that, ?Youth with higher caffeine intake commonly report troubling neurological symptoms, including nervousness, anxiety, jitteriness, and headache.?
Dr. Donna Seger, executive director of the Tennessee Poison Center and professor of Clinical Medicine at Vanderbilt University, says 40 mg of caffeine per stick of gum is unlikely to sicken a teenager or adult, but a toddler could be affected if they manage to sneak a few too many sticks.
?The nervous system isn?t developed till you?re in your twenties,? said Seger. ?All of these stimulants can [affect an underdeveloped system.]?
Wrigley warns that the gum is not intended for children or those sensitive to caffeine and will be marketed to those over the age of 25.
As more caffeinated products come on the market, Seger says she expects that more people could become caffeine dependent and need a little extra jolt of energy to get through the day.
?If that [it] is a positive experience and you feel like it?s something you want,? said Seger of the caffeinated gum. ?You?re going to use it more and more frequently.?

Zuckerberg said to The Verge when asked about the monetization strategy for Facebook Home. Another team member reportedly confirmed that these ads would be coming to cover feed specifically, but won?t be included when Facebook Home launches.

Privacy Concerns
Facebook Home brings your newsfeed to your phone?s lock screen, which means that theoretically anyone who grabs your phone can access your Facebook account. Facebook hasn?t clarified how this feature would work if you have a lock pattern protecting your screen, but exposing your news feed makes it that much easier for others to obtain personal information about you. If your phone is left unprotected, some else could browse through posts in your feed, comment on stories, and ?Like? items in a few quick seconds.
Reliance on Profile Pictures
Facebook Home comes with a slew of features that make it easier to stay connected with friends, but others could also add to the confusion. Remember last week when everyone changed their profile photo to an equal sign in support of gay marriage? Good luck identifying that chat head when it pops up on your screen.

ROME (AP) ? Baseball and softball's joint bid for Olympic reinstatement is still lacking a guarantee that major league stars would be available to play ahead of a key presentation to the IOC next month.
International Baseball Federation President Riccardo Fraccari is holding out hope that Major League Baseball will commit its players for at least the semifinals and finals of the proposed Olympic tournament, but he told The Associated Press on Wednesday that "we have to be realistic."
Baseball and softball have been out of the Olympics since 2008 and merged in a bid to return for the 2020 Games. They are competing against seven other sports for a single spot on the program.
On May 29 in St. Petersburg, Russia, the International Olympic Committee board will select one or more sports to submit for final consideration to the IOC general assembly in September.
"We need the utmost support from MLB to get past May," Fraccari said. "We're still negotiating.
"If we make it past this step there are a lot more cards to play. There are a lot of IOC members from Latin America who support baseball. The executive committee is one thing, the congress is another."
The Olympic tournaments would feature eight teams divided into two groups, with the top two finishers in each group advancing to the semifinals.
Another option Fraccari has floated is suspending the MLB All-Star Game every four years and having a break later in the season for the Olympics instead. But MLB does not appear open to that proposal.
The IOC voted in 2005 to remove baseball and softball from the Olympic program after the 2008 Beijing Games. As separate bids, the two sports both failed to return for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
However, wresting was cut in February from the 2020 Games by the IOC executive board and also will seek reinstatement.
Wrestling, which dates back to the ancient Olympics and the first modern games in 1896, has made leadership and rule changes in a bid to win reinstatement.
"It's much, much more complicated now," Fraccari said.
The others sports vying for entry are squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding, and the martial arts of karate and wushu.
The enormous insurance contracts it would require to lend out MLB players midseason is also a stumbling block.
Fraccari estimated that $18 million was spent on insurance for the recent World Baseball Classic, and even if the Olympic figure might be half that, it's still a problem.
"Who's going to pay?" he said.
Still, the bid is not dead yet, and it received a boost from the World Baseball Classic.
The Dominican Republic won the WBC by beating Puerto Rico 3-0 in the final of the 28-team tournament in San Francisco on March 19. Japan won the first two WBC titles, which started in 2006.
WBC organizers said they exceeded global broadcast and ticket sales targets this year.
"The WBC helped a lot," Fraccari said.

The Los Angeles Angels newcomer saw Cincinnati fans packed downtown and remembered making his big league debut in the same spot a while ago.
"People are lined up in the streets, there's the parade," he said. "It's just an awesome feeling. It never gets old ? opening day ? especially when you're where you started."
All across the majors, baseball was in full swing Monday.
Bryce Harper put on quite a show in Washington. The 20-year-old star hit home runs his first two times up and earned a few "M-V-P!" chants during a 2-0 win over Miami.
At Target Field in Minnesota, players and fans bundled up. It was 35 degrees with 17 mph winds as the Twins took on ace Justin Verlander and the AL champion Detroit Tigers, who won 4-2.
"It's whoever whines about it the least, I think, who'll have the best chance of winning today," Twins first baseman Justin Morneau said.
The slugger's remedy for the cold?
"Put hot sauce all over and throw some long sleeves on and some long johns and go out there and run around and enjoy it," he joked.
The hot chocolate line was 12 to 15 people deep at the ballpark while the beer vendors were generally talking among themselves.
"It's opening Day. You can't not come," said fan Ripley Peterson, dressed in six layers for the chill. "I love baseball, I love the Twins. Opening day is a special thing. Unless it's like a blizzard, I'm going to be here."
The 2013 season officially opened Sunday night when the Houston Astros beat Texas.
Most every other team was in action Monday. From old rivalries on the coasts ? Red Sox-Yankees in New York, Giants-Dodgers in Los Angeles ? there was plenty to celebrate with a dozen games.
"The three big holidays ? Thanksgiving, Christmas and opening day," LA co-owner Stan Kasten said, watching the stands at Dodger Stadium fill up before the game against World Series champion San Francisco.
A few minutes later, a stadium camera swung to Vin Scully's booth, where he's starting his 64th season, and the revered broadcaster pronounced: "It's time for Dodger baseball."
Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson was standing on the mound before the game when manager Don Mattingly came out and signaled for a reliever. In came Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax wearing his No. 32 vintage jersey, and the ol' left-hander threw out the first ball to former Dodgers ace Orel Hershiser.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Catholics and Protestants flocked to churches to celebrate Easter on Sunday in the Holy Land and across the broader Middle East, praying, singing and rejoicing as a new pope pleaded for peace in the region.
Some Mideast Christian communities are in flux, while others feel isolated from their Muslim-majority societies. In places like Iraq, they have sometimes been the victims of bloody sectarian attacks.
At St. Joseph Chaldean Church in Baghdad, some 200 worshippers attended an Easter mass that the Rev. Saad Sirop led behind concrete blast walls and a tight security cordon. Churches have been under tighter security since a 2010 attack killed dozens.
"We pray for love and peace to spread through the world," said worshipper Fatin Yousef, 49, who arrived immaculately dressed for the holiday. She wore a black skirt, low-heeled pumps and a striped shirt and her hair tumbled in salon-created curls.
It was the first Easter since the election of Pope Francis and she and others expressed hope in their new spiritual leader. "We hope Pope Francis will help make it better for Christians in Iraq," she said.
The pope spoke of the Middle East in his first Easter message, pleading for Israelis and Palestinians to resume negotiations to "end a conflict that has lasted all too long."
He also called for peace in Iraq and in Syria. "How much blood has been shed! And how much suffering must there still be before a political solution to the crisis will be found?" Francis asked.
In Jerusalem, Catholics worshipped in the church of the Holy Sepulcher, built on a hill where tradition holds that Jesus was crucified, briefly entombed and then resurrected. The cavernous, maze-like structure is home to different churches belonging to rival sects that are crammed into different nooks and even the roof.
Clergy in white and gold robes led the service held around the Edicule, the small chamber at the core of the church marking the site of Jesus' tomb. Many foreign visitors were among the worshippers.
"It's very special," said Arthur Stanton, a visitor from Australia. "It represents the reason why we were put on this planet, and the salvation that has come to us through Jesus."
Israel's Tourism Ministry said it expects some 150,000 visitors during holy week and the Jewish festival of Passover, which coincide this year. It is one of the busiest times of the year for the local tourism industry.
Protestants held Easter ceremonies outside Jerusalem's walled Old City at the Garden Tomb, a small, enclosed green area that some identify as the site of Jesus' burial. Another service was held at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Jesus' traditional birthplace.
Catholics and Protestants, who follow the new, Gregorian calendar, celebrate Easter on Sunday. Orthodox Christians, who follow the old, Julian calendar, will mark it in May.
There are no precise numbers on how many Christians there are in the Middle East. Census figures showing the size of religious and ethnic groups are hard to obtain.
Christian populations are thought to be shrinking or at least growing more slowly than their Muslim compatriots in much of the Middle East, largely due to emigration as they leave for better opportunities and to join families abroad. Some feel more uncomfortable amid growing Muslim majorities that they see as becoming more outwardly pious and politically Islamist over the decades.
The situation for some Mideast Christians is in flux.
In Syria, Christians, who make up some 10 percent of the country's 23 million people, have mostly stayed on the sidelines of the two-year civil war. While outraged by the regime of Bashar Assad's brutal efforts to quash the opposition, they are equally frightened by the Islamist rhetoric of many rebels and their heavy reliance on extremist fighters.
Christians make up some 10 percent of Egypt's 85 million people. Human rights groups say the police under former authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak rarely took the needed steps to prevent flare-ups of violence against Christians, a situation that persisted since he was overthrown in 2011. The rise of Islamists in Egypt has emboldened extremists to target churches and Coptic property, leading to a spike in attacks and sometimes unprecedented steps like the evacuation of entire Christian populations from villages.
In Libya, most Christians are Egyptian laborers who are working in the oil-rich country. Tensions rose last month after assailants torched a church in the eastern city of Benghazi and militias arrested some 100 Christians, mostly Egyptian, accusing them of proselytizing.
In Iraq, Christians have suffered repeated attacks by Islamic militants since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, and hundreds of thousands have left the country. Church officials estimate that the Christian communities have shrunk by at least half. The worst attack was at Baghdad's soaring Our Lady of Salvation church in October 2010 that killed more than 50 worshippers and wounded scores of others.
There currently are an estimated 400,000 to 600,000 Christians in Iraq, with most belonging to ancient eastern churches. Some two-thirds of Iraq's Christians are Catholics of the Chaldean church and the smaller Assyrian Catholic church. Members of both churches chant in dialects of ancient Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke.
Yousef, the worshipper in Baghdad, said lingering fear pushed her to send her son to live with relatives in Arizona last year. Yousef said she was arranging for her other daughter and son to immigrate.
"There's still fear here, and there's no stability in this country," she said.
Iraqi officials have made efforts to secure churches since the violence of 2010.
High blast walls topped with wire netting and barbed wire surrounded the St. Joseph Church in Baghdad's middle-class district of Karradeh. Four Iraqi Christian volunteers stood at the church entrance, double-checking the people entering. And blue-khaki clad Iraqi police guarded roads surrounding the church and checked papers of passers-by as worshippers filed inside.
White-robed church volunteers marched down the church aisle behind Father Sirop, who waved incense and chanted in the white-painted church adorned with three ornate chandeliers and a series of simple paintings illustrating the life of Christ.
Worshippers stood for lengthy passages of Sirop's mass, at one point bursting into applause when he told them, "Celebrate! You are Christians!"
