China: Remarks from Abe 'mislead the world'

Japanese leader's China-bashing aims to 'seek support from US'
Beijing on Friday criticized hostile comments regarding China made by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his visit to Washington. Abe, who was due to hold talks with US President Barack Obama that were expected to focus on a closer alliance, told the Washington Post that China has a "deeply ingrained" need to spar with Japan and other Asian neighbors over territory. The remarks, published on Thursday, provoked a strong protest from Beijing. Abe is keen to attract more attention from Washington by criticizing Beijing, observers said. Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a news conference later on Friday that Japan intends to play up the "China threat", mislead world opinion, purposely create regional tensions and has ulterior motives. Lu Yaodong, director of the department of Japanese diplomacy of the Institute of Japanese Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said Tokyo has been "shifting blame to China" and has alleged China was the troublemaker for regional security issues. Abe's remarks came in an attempt to attract more attention from Washington, but "in fact it was Japan who played a role in stirring up the situation in Northeast Asia", Lu said. Beijing urged Japan to take a correct view of China and its development and pursue a "positive policy" with China, according to Hong. Abe has repeatedly emphasized that the relationship with China remains one of the most important for Japan, and that Tokyo will push forward strategic and mutually beneficial relations through an overall perspective, Suga said. China-Japan ties were deadlocked after the Japanese government in September illegally "purchased" part of the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. Beijing has since beefed up regular patrols in the waters off the islands. Hiromasa Yonekura, chairman of the Japan Business Federation and an influential industry figure, started a three-day visit to China on Friday, seeking a breakthrough for strained China-Japan ties, Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported. Jiang Xinfeng, an expert on Japanese studies at the PLA Academy of Military Sciences, said Japan has been seeking dual policies toward China, and in light of its friendly posture Japan has persistently escalated confrontations against China regarding the Diaoyu Islands. "Japan has ramped up reconnaissance of the relevant waters and airspace, and has scrambled F-15 fighter jets to follow the China Marine Surveillance aircraft," Jiang said. Tension further flared after Japan spread accusations on Feb 5 that Chinese warships targeted Japanese vessels using fire-control radar. The Chinese Defense Ministry then refuted the accusation and said the media hype was meant to mislead international public opinion. China carries out normal maritime activities in accordance with domestic and international laws, and "freedom and security of navigation in the East China Sea and South China Sea have never been affected", Hong Lei said on Friday. Jiang, at the PLA Academy of Military Science, said a further deterioration, and even a major breakdown in relations, is not a good thing for Japan and is also not within the expectations of the US. During his meeting with Obama, Abe may stress the importance of boosting US-Japan cooperation to contain China's "provocations" regarding the Diaoyu Islands, Japan's Fuji Television reported. At a news briefing on Thursday, White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said the upcoming meeting underscored the importance of the US-Japan alliance as "the foundation of US strategy in Asia". Liu Jiangyong, an expert on Japanese studies at Tsinghua University, said Washington should not let Tokyo hijack the US over the Diaoyu Islands. "It is impossible (for Japan) to establish a strategic order in the Asia-Pacific region that is led by Japan," Liu said. Washington has refused to take a position on the territorial row, though it said the islands fall within the scope of a 1960 US-Japan mutual security treaty.

Seth MacFarlane bringing a surprise factor as Oscar host

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar night traditionally comes packed with shocks and upsets for the winners, but on Sunday the biggest surprise could be the host - provocative comedian, actor and singer Seth MacFarlane.

MacFarlane, 39, the creator of the edgy animated TV series "Family Guy," "American Dad" and "The Cleveland Show," has awards watchers and audiences intrigued as to what he has up his sleeve for the movie industry's biggest night.

"We love the expectation of the newness of Seth and we love the fact that people don't quite know what they're going to get with him as a host. We think it adds to the speculation and the interest in the show," said Neil Meron, who is co-producing the Academy Awards telecast for the first time with Craig Zadan.

Zadan and Meron, who produced the film version of musical "Chicago" as well as Broadway shows, recruited MacFarlane last year, saying his skills "blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh."

After 2011's much-panned "youth Oscars" with hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway, and 2012's return to tradition with nine-time master of ceremonies Billy Crystal, Sunday's three-hour Academy Awards show will be all about the unexpected.

MacFarlane has often come under fire from U.S. watchdog groups for making crude jokes. The Parents Television Council regularly ranks "Family Guy" among their "worst prime-time shows for family viewing" on the grounds that it may include gratuitous sex or obscene language.

But while the star-studded audience at Sunday's ceremony may be squirming in their seats in anticipation of MacFarlane's barbs, Meron and Zadan say they are not worried.

"We're not nervous because everything he writes, he runs by us," Zadan told Reuters.

Still, the audience inside Hollywood's Dolby Theatre and an estimated one billion watching on TV around the world can expect to see some the improvisation skills MacFarlane's showed off when hosting "Saturday Night Live" in September.

On that live venue, MacFarlane impersonated Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte and "Star Trek" actor George Takei.

"We live for the moments that happen on stage. Those are some of the great Oscar moments of the past. ... We hope there are moments where Seth can be completely spontaneous because that makes for a better show," Meron said.

"TED" APPEAL

Compared to well-known hosts from previous years such as Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin and Ellen DeGeneres, MacFarlane is better known by the numerous voices on his animated television shows and is not a regular in the Hollywood movie or TV scene.

The comedian has been playing up his outsider status in Oscar promotions. "Hi, I'm Seth MacFarlane - ask your kids - and I'll be hosting The Academy Awards - ask your parents," he quips in one video.

But MacFarlane holds strong appeal in a demographic highly desired by the Oscar organizers and advertisers - the coveted 18-49 audience who love his animated shows.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hands out the Oscars, has struggled in recent years to appeal to a younger audience. More than 39 million Americans tuned in to watch Crystal take the helm in 2012, but some critics called the show old-fashioned.

MacFarlane earned his movie credentials last year after his raunchy directorial debut with "Ted," about a foul-mouthed pot-smoking teddy bear, became the highest-grossing R-rated original comedy in movie history.

The film's star Mark Wahlberg will be joining the naughty bear on stage on Sunday to present an award.

MacFarlane has also showcased his singing talents on "Family Guy," with big musical numbers such as the catchy "Shipoopi" from Broadway hit "The Music Man" and a cheeky musical retort to federal TV regulators.

The host is also nominated for an Oscar for writing the lyrics to "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from "Ted."

"You don't hire Seth MacFarlane and not have tons of comedy. Because Seth also has a beautiful voice, it allows a host who does a lot of comedy and sings beautifully. So we are going to make use of his ability as a singer," Zadan said.

Shiites bury their dead in troubled Pakistani city

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) ? Pakistani Shiites buried their kin killed in a massive bombing last weekend in the southwestern city of Quetta but the funeral on Wednesday was marred by gunfire as both protesters and police fired into the air.

Shiite Muslims have increasingly come under attack in this Sunni Muslim-dominated country where many extremists do not consider them to be true Muslims.

After Saturday's bombing killed 89 people ? the second mass-casualty assault on Shiites in Quetta in as many months ? Pakistani Shiites refused to bury their dead for three days and demanded government action. The tension evident at the funeral suggested that recent government attempts to address the problem may not be enough to appease them.

Mourners on Wednesday lowered the bodies of 89 of the victims, wrapped in white cloth, into a long line of graves dug out at the local Shiite cemetery in Quetta.

But a group of about 100 female relatives of the deceased tried to halt the funeral because they felt the government still hadn't met their demands, namely that the army lead an operation against militant groups responsible for the attacks.

The melee escalated as the women then tried to block a main highway close to the graveyard, said Shiite community leader Qayum Changezi. Angry relatives of the deceased pelted police and government officials with stones, Changezi also said.

Both police and relatives fired into the air ? the relatives in anger and the police to disperse the crowd ? said police officer Fayaz Sumbal.

Mourners scattered after the gunfire but the burial continued after the protest died down.

"We had refused to bury our dear ones with a hope that the government will take concrete steps by arresting the killers, but so far no attacker has been arrested," said Mohammed Mahdi, 16, who lost his father in the bombing. He said he now fears for his family's safety.

There's been no indication that the army would take control of the city, another longtime demand of protesters. But the government announced on Monday that paramilitary forces began an operation against the anti-Shiite militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which claimed responsibility for Saturday night's blast, and other militant groups.

The government also replaced the top police officer in Baluchistan on Tuesday. And Fayaz Sumbal, deputy police chief in Quetta has also been ordered to replace the chief of police operations in Quetta.

Shiites and human rights groups have criticized police and paramilitary forces under control of the Interior Ministry in Quetta for failing to protect the minority sect, which comprises up to 20 percent of the country's population of 180 million.

They link the authorities' apparent apathy by pointing to past connections between the country's military and anti-Shiite militants, and also allege that the militants are seen as less of a threat than the Taliban because they are not targeting the state. Political parties have also relied on banned sectarian groups to deliver votes in elections.

It remains to be seen what impact the government's recent actions will have on the problem of sectarian violence in Quetta. Suspected militants are notoriously difficult to prosecute in Pakistan, and it's unclear if the operation against Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and others will be sustained.

Last month, 86 Shiite Muslims in Quetta were killed in a major attack that eventually led the country's prime minister to sack the chief minister of Baluchistan province and his cabinet. But Saturday's attack showed that militants were still a potent force in the province.

Pakistan has launched numerous military operations against militants in recent years, but the focus has been on the Pakistani Taliban, who are waging a bloody insurgency against the state that has killed thousands of people.

Radical Sunni militants have stepped up attacks against Shiites over the past year, and violence has been especially bad in Baluchistan. In the first two months of the year, more Shiites have been killed there than in all of last year.

Walorski and Coats respond to President's State of the Union address

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) and U.S. Senator Dan Coats released the following responses to the President?s State of the Union address:

Rep. Walorski's statement:

?House Republicans are ready to get to work on common sense reforms to reduce our deficit and wasteful government spending in this Congress.

?In Indiana, Hoosiers sit around their kitchen tables and make tough choices to keep a budget in their households, and they expect Congress to do the same.? For too long, there has been disconnect between Washington politics and common sense principles?and our families are paying the price.

?The formula to revitalizing this economy is not more government, more costly regulation, or higher taxes.? We?ve tried that approach.? It has yielded more debt, a stalled economy, and political gridlock.

?I will support a different equation: Congress must work together on a responsible, step-by-step approach.? Sequestration triggers devastating mandatory cuts: half from domestic programs and half from the military.? This is a reckless strategy, and must be replaced with common sense reforms.

?House Republicans have twice tried to pass an alternative to sequestration, with no response from the President or Washington Democrats.

?Across the board spending cuts will cause further damage to the economy and cost jobs for hard working Americans that we simply cannot afford.? It will devastate our military and their families.? As we address our fiscal issues in Washington, I am proud to bring Indiana?s Hoosier common sense to the equation.?

?To yield success, we must do this together: step-by-step, responsibly, and to preserve the American dream.?

?

Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) issued the following statement regarding President Obama?s State of the Union speech:

??While I am pleased President Obama finally has turned his focus back to the ongoing jobs crisis, I am disappointed that he continues to call for higher taxes to pay for more spending. We have heard many of these words before, the real test will be to see if the president finally will lead and act on pro-growth policies.

?This is certainly not the ?balanced? approach the president has been promising the American people. If the president was as committed to reducing the debt and growing the economy as he is to spending and taxing, our country would be in a much stronger position today. President Obama and Congress must do more to reduce the nearly $16.5 trillion debt, $6 trillion of which was added under this administration alone.

?President Obama also mentioned he is willing to restructure programs like Medicare. He has made this commitment before, but we have yet to see action. I hope this time will be different, and the president will offer a specific plan. Hard-working Hoosiers and millions of Americans have spent a lifetime paying into our health and retirement security programs. If we don't take steps to restructure and save these programs, we will lose the ability to provide benefits for current and future recipients.

?The president must lead on these critical issues and work with Congress to enact real spending reforms. The best investment we can make in America?s future is to restore our fiscal health by removing the burden of excessive debt and taxation hindering opportunity and economic growth.?

?

FoxDavies Daily Monitor - MEO Australia, Gold Oil and Sound Oil

MEO Australia (BUY, A$0.55) (MEO AU, MCap: A$54M, A$0.086) - Heron Extension: Today's announcement outlines MEO's extension of the time available to Eni to study whether it will progress to the next stage of drilling on Heron to March 1st. Heron has to compete on a global scale for Eni's investment (due to the number of projects that Eni studies at any one time), and we believe that today's announcement, is a positive step from MEO, supports the licence's wider prospectivity, and our current outlook for the Company; remember Blackwood is in the same licence, and Eni recently committed to drilling a follow-up there. We are taking this opportunity to reiterate our BUY Recommendation and A$0.55 Target Price.

Gold Oil (GOO LN, MCap: ?21M, 1.77p) - Exiting the Goo?: Today's news, that is it has increased its interest in the Nancy Burdine field to 100%. While production at this field is currently small, a higher interest is a lifeline for the Company and is a statement of intent, which is that it will begin to focus on what is important for all companies, cash. Following what has been a difficult period for the Company, any improvement in fortunes, no matter how small, should be welcomed, and while there needs to be a continuation of news such as this for a discernible pattern to be established, the outlook, on the basis of the performance of management since the shares have returned from suspension, is promising.

Sound Oil (SOU LN, MCap: ?17M, 7.9p) - And so it Begins?: The Company has secured a rig to begin the appraisal of its Nervesa asset in Northern Italy, which in turn is the start of the active programme that it has for 2013. The Company is funded through its 2013 programme, and we believe that the focus on its Italian assets will start to yield results, which we believe will be reflected in valuations as the year progresses.

Kea Petroleum (KEA LN, MCap: ?56M, 8.8p) - Puka-2 is Pukka: Today's announcement that Kea's second well in its Puka asset has intersected an oil reservoir in the lower Mako sands. While testing will be required to evaluate what this discovery means for recoverable reserves, the discovery of deeper prospectivity is a positive step forward for the commerciality of the field.

Mitch Plotnick: Thirty Minutes for Better Health

I was never a big fan of New Year's resolutions. I applaud anyone who takes action to improve their life. But self-improvement is not driven by a date on a calendar. Instead, self-improvement is readily achieved when four things are present:

? A realistic goal. For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds, it's not happening by the weekend. Or, if you've never boiled water successfully, then you're not likely to master the delicious art of cooking healthy grains in one evening.

? A true intention to improve. This means you truly are ready to do what is necessary to change the landscape of your life. This is so different than simply saying you will improve some aspect of your life just because it is January 1.

? A game plan for success. You have defined what is required to start the change process and maintain it, and you have determined what success looks like.

? The right tools. If you plan to walk more, walking shoes would be helpful. If you desire to eat healthier foods, but you don't know what healthy foods are all about, then you'll need a coach to guide you. If you want to practice yoga, you'll need a mat.

Each of those four elements plays a key role in your ability to accomplish the self-improvement you are seeking. But it all starts with a realistic goal. If your goal is too big, too broad or too ambitious, you're setting yourself up to fall short.

Also, self-improvement isn't achieved with a "quick fix" or a sudden, dramatic change in behavior. It is attained through a series of small steps that are easy to implement and sustain. Start with the first positive step forward and continue from there, one small step at a time.

So, rather than start your self-improvement quest by trying to change everything in your life at once, pick just one thing that you'd like to improve, and give yourself 30 minutes every few days to work on that goal. Little by little. No deadlines. No pressure.

For example, if you want to cook healthier foods, give yourself 30 minutes every few days to shop for nutrient-rich foods and try new recipes that resonate with your taste buds.

If you want to have more physical activity, and you have been given approval by your doctor to do a particular exercise regimen every few days for 30 minutes, then start enjoying the new "movement" in your life.

If you want to practice meditation, then take 30 minutes every few days to calm yourself with that stillness and focus.

Perhaps you'd like to be more reflective about your life. Every few days take 30 minutes to write your thoughts down on paper, and enjoy the healing powers of journaling.

Always remember to be gentle with yourself and honor yourself. Life today has enough pressure in it already. Don't add to that by imposing overwhelming self-improvement goals on yourself. Just start by focusing on one realistic goal, and take 30 minutes every few days to apply yourself to achieving that goal.

If you follow this advice, self-improvement will be attainable, sustainable and enjoyable. And you can start your self-improvement journey any day of the year!

I'd love to hear from you about this subject. Contact me through my website at www.mitchplotnick.com. And remember, eat well, be well, and have a great day!

Some omega-3 oils better than others for protection against liver disease

Feb. 5, 2013 ? Research at Oregon State University has found that one particular omega-3 fatty acid has a powerful effect in preventing liver inflammation and fibrosis -- common problems that are steadily rising along with the number of Americans who are overweight.

The American Liver Foundation has estimated that about 25 percent of the nation's population, and 75 percent of those who are obese, have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. This early-stage health condition can sometimes progress to more serious, even fatal diseases, including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH, as well as cirrhosis and liver cancer.

The study, published online in the Journal of Nutrition, was one of the first to directly compare the effects of two of the omega-3 fatty acids often cited for their nutritional value, DHA and EPA.

In research with laboratory animals, it found that EPA had comparatively little effect on preventing the fibrosis, or scarring, that's associated with NASH. However, DHA supplementation reduced the proteins involved in liver fibrosis by more than 65 percent.

"A reduction of that magnitude in the actual scarring and damage to the liver is very important," said Donald Jump, a principal investigator with the Linus Pauling Institute at OSU and a professor in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences.

"Many clinical trials are being done with omega-3 fatty acids related to liver disease," Jump said. "Our studies may represent the first to specifically compare the capacity of EPA versus DHA to prevent NASH. It appears that DHA, which can also be converted to EPA in the human body, is one of the most valuable for this purpose."

The issues have taken center stage as the weight of Americans continues to rise, with a related increase in the incidence of fatty liver disease and liver damage.

NASH is a progressive form of liver disease that is associated with chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, resulting from excess fat storage in the liver. Chronic inflammation can eventually lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, or even liver cancer. While management of lifestyle, including weight loss and exercise, is one approach to control the onset and progression of fatty liver disease, other approaches are needed to prevent and treat it.

About 30-40 percent of people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease progress to NASH, which in turn can result in cirrhosis, a major risk factor for liver cancer. While this research studied the prevention of fatty liver disease, Jump said, ongoing studies are examining the capacity of DHA to be used in NASH therapy.

The levels of omega-3 oils needed vary with the health concern, officials say.

"Omega-3 fatty acids are typically recommended for the prevention of cardiovascular disease," Jump said. "Recommended intake levels of omega-3 fatty acids in humans for disease prevention are around 200-500 milligrams of combined DHA and EPA per day."

Levels used in therapy to lower blood triglycerides, also a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, are higher, about 2-4 grams of combined EPA and DHA per day. The OSU studies with mice used DHA at levels comparable to the triglyceride therapies.

"DHA was more effective than EPA at attenuating inflammation, oxidative stress, fibrosis and hepatic damage," the researchers wrote in their conclusion. "Based on these results, DHA may be a more attractive dietary supplement than EPA for the prevention and potential treatment of NASH in obese humans."

This work was the result of a four-year study supported by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, as well as the National Institutes of Health. Co-authors on the paper included Christopher M. Depner and Kenneth A. Philbrick, both graduate students in the Nutrition Graduate Program at OSU.

Outrage over Saudi 'blood money' in girl's death

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Online activists in Saudi Arabia are calling for harsher punishments for child abuse after reports that a prominent cleric received only a light sentence after confessing to the beating death of his 5-year-old daughter.

The social media campaign gaining momentum Sunday is the latest attempt to use the Internet to pressure the kingdom's ultraconservative rulers.

Saudi media reports say Fayhan al-Ghamdi, a frequent guest on Islamic TV programs, was arrested in November on charges of killing the girl. The reports said he questioned the child's virginity.

Saudi media say he was freed last week after serving a short prison term and agreeing to pay $50,000 in "blood money" to avoid a possible death sentence.

The money was presumably offered to the girl's mother or other relatives.

German jitters hit European shares, euro

LONDON (Reuters) - European shares fell for a second straight day and the euro halted its recent rally, as weak German retail sales and poor earnings at its biggest bank added to investors' nerves after a shock fourth quarter contraction in the U.S. economy.

Data on Wednesday showed U.S. GDP slipped back 0.1 percent, though the country's central bank, the Federal Reserve, indicated the pullback was likely to be brief as it repeated its pledge to continue providing support.

European shares, which have surged 3.7 percent this month, took their biggest daily hit of the year on Wednesday, and a plunge in German retail sales, stagnant French consumer spending and a huge quarterly loss at Deutsche Bank dashed hopes of a quick rebound.

The mood blackened through the morning, leaving London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> down 0.3 to 0.6 percent by 5:15 a.m. ET. The MSCI world share index <.miwd00000pus> was down 0.1 percent despite shares in Asia posting modest gains. <.l><.eu><.n/>

"Perhaps the German retail sales have contributed a little bit, but we knew that Q4 was weak, so I would it attribute it more to earnings news," said Chris Scicluna, an economist at Daiwa Capital Markets.

"The Deutsche Bank loss does look to be on the sizable side. There has clearly been some mismatch between financial markets and the real economy so that does lend itself to a bit of a pullback."

In the currency market, the German jitters also put the euro under pressure and halted its recent 4 percent rally.

It had started to show signs of stabilization by mid-morning but remained well short of Wednesday's 14-month high of $1.3588 at $1.3560. The Federal Reserve's promise of continued support was widely expected to mitigate the fall, however, by keeping downward pressure on the dollar.

Evidence of that pull was seen as the dollar slipped 0.2 percent against the yen to 90.88 yen, having hit its strongest level since 2010 on Wednesday. Market focus now turns to Friday's monthly U.S. employment report.

PULL-BACK

The nervy market atmosphere also pushed up Spanish and Italian government bond yields as some investors switched from higher-yielding debt into German Bunds.

Spanish 10-year yields rose 10 basis points on the day to 5.31 percent, while equivalent Italian debt rose 10 bps to 4.38 percent.

German Bund futures were half a point higher, spurred on by the Fed's determination to maintain its policy of stimulus for the U.S. economy.

The downbeat European mood also began to creep into commodities markets, though investors seemed broadly happy to stick with the bigger picture view that the global economy is gradually regaining strength.

Risky assets such as equities, commodities, and high-yield debt have risen sharply in the past six months as growth in emerging economies like China has picked up and fears of a collapse of the euro have been calmed by the European Central Bank.

Spot gold drifted down to $1,675 an ounce, having hit a one-week high on Wednesday, while oil prices inched down 23 cents to just under $115 per barrel, still well above their starting price this year of $110 a barrel.

And there was no sign of weakness in growth-attuned copper as it marched to its highest level since October.

"We are still quite confident about a Chinese copper demand recovery in the first half, and we have seen evidence of pent-up demand, so the downside risk is limited," said Henry Liu, head of commodity research at Mirae Asset Securities in Hong Kong.

"But exceeding $8,500 this year might be a challenge, because domestic inventories are quite high," he added.

'BATTLESTATIONS!': Call-in war over Boy Scouts' gay ban

By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News

?BATTLESTATIONS!? ?The phones are ringing off the wall.? ?Good turn for the day. (takes less than one minute).?

These are the battle cries made by advocates on both sides of the debate over allowing gays into the Boy Scouts. They are urging their supporters to call or email the private youth organization as it weighs lifting its longstanding, controversial ban, with a decision expected next week.

The new policy, now under discussion, would revise the national organization?s rules to allow local sponsoring organizations to decide for themselves whether to admit gay scouts and leaders. If approved, the change could be announced as early as next week, after the Boy Scouts of America's national board holds a regularly scheduled meeting.

On the Facebook page for George Takei, known for his role as Mr. Sulu in Star Trek, he urged those wanting to end the ban to hit their ?BATTLESTATIONS!? and to ?Takei Stand.? He gave supporters a step-by-step guide, telling them to call, say they were for the change, and then to like and share the message. ?As of Thursday afternoon, more than 56,000 people had liked his status and 41,000 had shared it, while another 6,000 left comments.

?Let's FLOOD their lines with thousands of calls. (Believe me, the other side's busy, too...),? he wrote.

And indeed, they were.?The Family Research Council, which supports maintaining the ban, noted in an appeal to its supporters on its website: ?The phones are ringing off the wall.?

?If you've tried to get through to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), you know it's been tough. If you've wanted to express your concern about the BSA abandoning their longstanding policy of safeguarding Scouts by restricting openly homosexual Scout leaders from holding leadership positions, you may have been greeted by an endlessly ringing phone. This may be one instance in which the Boy Scouts were not prepared,? for what the council said was the response of thousands of Americans opposed to the change.

It then listed the numbers for each of the BSA?s board members and provided a sample phone script for supporters to read. On the council?s Facebook page, a similar post had received nearly 3,900 likes and more than 2,800 shares plus 800 comments.

After years of heartache, gay Scouts and supporters react warily over proposal to lift ban

When a reporter called the BSA Wednesday night, a woman who answered the phone asked, ?Are you for or against the proposed policy change?? When the reporter identified her news organization, the woman said the Scouts had been taking calls since about 3 p.m. Monday and it had been very busy.

?When we receive calls we are indeed allowing people to provide feedback, but it?s not a poll (and we won?t be releasing data about the feedback),? BSA spokesman Deron Smith said in an email, responding to an inquiry about the calls and when they began.

On the organization's Facebook page, people were asked to provide feedback by email or to a phone number provided. Some who posted there asked about getting a running tally.

But by Thursday afternoon, opponents of the ban reported that the BSA was no longer taking the phone feedback (Smith did not respond to an inquiry on whether the BSA had stopped). So the secondary tactic was deployed.

?so inundated! recorded msg states system can no longer take calls! revolution by email it is,? wrote one poster, identified as Seattle Punk Rock Aerobics.
