Murtazin: next Vertu blingphone will run Android, stoop to Rolex-style pricing

Murtazin next Vertu blingphone will run Android, stoop to a Rolexstyle price

Our favorite Russian blogger, who's admittedly often wrong on a few little things, says he has the low-down on a new Vertu smartphone coming in February. It'd be the first release since Nokia sold the luxury brand to a private equity firm last year, and Eldar Murtazin claims the rumored switch from Symbian to Android is definitely a go-er. He also reckons the handset will cost around $4,000, which is loose change compared to some previous Vertus -- like the $27k model shown above. There are no further details to report, aside from a fleeting reference to the legacy of Nokia's 8800 slider, so don't go converting your Swiss francs just yet.

Harbaugh Family Started Football Career in Eaton

EATON -- This Sunday, football history will be made when Jim and John Harbaugh become the first brothers to coach against each other in the Super Bowl.

But the Harbaughs' passion for the game actually started here in the Miami Valley on a football field in Eaton, where dad, Jack, roamed the sidelines.

''He was only here for two years, but he made quite an impact on the town.'', Phillip Manley, who played for Eaton in 1964 told us.

Jack Harbaugh's first head coaching job was with Eaton High School from 1964-65, and even today at the Red Mule Inn, his former players still talk about his arrival.

''My sophomore year we were 0-10, my junior year we went 1-9 and then Jack came in and turned the program around.'', Ron Hayes, another one of Harbaugh's former players tells us.

The former Eaton players tell us Jim and John spent a lot of time on the sidelines, when they were just two and three years old, and none of the former Fighting Eagles are shocked by their rise to success.

''Well it doesn't surprise me.? I'd say the sons, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.'', Brad Davis remembers.

Bob and Brad Davis add another father son twist to this story, Bob played for Jack at Eaton and Bob was part of the elder Harbaugh's two decades of success at Western Kentucky.

''Not many father and sons can sit back and enjoy this moment.? It really is quite special and I'm not sure how many people can appreciate that.? We both have been under Harbaugh, influenced by Harbaugh and that's a special thing.''

But ask these guys which Harbaugh they will be rooting for this Sunday, and they all come up undecided.

''Not rooting for either one of them, just thrilled to death that both of them have accomplished what they accomplished.''

Jack Harbaugh was at Eaton for two seasons before eventually moving to Xenia for one year and eventually went on to win a National Championship at Western Kentucky.Harbaugh Family Started Football Career in Eaton

Alberto Del Rio Reveals Why WWE Isn't Focusing On Mexico, Injury Update On NXT Star

- The following comes from Kris Zellner's Lucha Report:

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Alberto del Rio gave an interview with Yahoo! Deportes over the weekend where he admitted that Mexico isn't in the WWE plans anymore due to declining a economy, attendances, ratings, and even piracy. ADR said that once WWE sees that a market is beyond saving in their minds then they would turn their attention to newer markets. ADR said that a couple of years ago Mexico was held in high regard by the promotion but their last tour there last year was considered a flop in their eyes with the lack of merchandise sold being a key factor in determining that the product just wasn't hot anymore. ADR spoke of his future and said while he hopes to return to Mexico one day he feels a deep sense of gratitude to the WWE for giving him the opportunity that made him a superstar and they stood by him in very difficult situations. ADR said that the WWE is like family and when he retires he hopes to become a road agent where he will be able to share his experiences with younger talent to help them grow to become superstars like him.

Yahoo! Deportes full interview with Del Rio is at this link.

- WWE NXT wrestler CJ Parker has been out of action for a few months with a wrist injury. Parker tweeted about how today is a "huge day" because he will be visiting doctors to find out when he is able to return.

Gold imports soar in India as wedding season approaches

Gold, News & Features, Resource News
?

By Shivom Seth

Bullion traders across the country are one step ahead of the Indian government. Even as the government was pondering a proposal to hike customs duty on the import of gold this month, gold imports soared by 15% to 75 tonnes in January.

Though the government did go ahead and ultimately raise duties by 50% from 4% to 6% on January 21, bullion traders cornered most of the precious metal in the first three weeks of the month in anticipation of the hike in customs duty.

Is there anything that prevents us from reducing our employees ...

Q. Can we change employees? work hours on short notice by altering their schedules? Also, we have a part-time employee who?s been employed for a few months working 32 hours a week. She?s preparing to return to work after recovering from a car accident. Can we reduce her work hours?

A. You can change employees? work hours prospectively, assuming you do so in a nondiscriminatory manner.

With regard to the part-time employee, does your desire to reduce her hours have anything to do with her car accident? Beware assuming that, because of her accident, she will not be able to work the same schedule that she worked before the accident (unless she has asked to reduce her hours).

If you have other reasons to reduce her hours, you can do so as long as you are not singling her out. Make sure that you have strong business reasons for the decision.

Feeling flirty? Wait for the sun to shine

Jan. 28, 2013 ? We all know how casual flirtation can lift one's mood, which can be important at this time of year when the winter blues are at their peak. But if you are more serious about your flirting and hope to get that all important phone number, you're better off waiting until it's sunny, according to new French research published in the journal Social Influence.

Nicolas Gu?guen of the University of South Brittany -- who has previously investigated how wearing red lipstick can increase a waitress' tips -- conducted a study in which an 'attractive' 20 year old male approached 18-25 year old women walking alone in the street and asked them for their phone numbers. The women were solicited on both sunny and cloudy (but not rainy) days, when the temperature was about the same.

In the past other environmental factors have been found to make people more likely to flirt or exchange phone numbers -- the presence of pleasant smells, romantic music or certain colours have all been found to have an effect.

Previous research has also shown how the weather can affect certain social behaviours -- sunshine makes people more likely to help strangers or answer a survey, and people tend to leave bigger tips in restaurants on sunny days. But this is the first research to explore how the weather may influence courtship or dating behaviour.

It was found that women were more receptive to being approached and flirted with -- and give out their phone numbers -- on sunny days: over a fifth -- 22.4% -- of women did so when the sun was out, as opposed to 13.9% on the cloudy days.

(The phone numbers were later used to contact the women and tell them the true nature of the study, as per the recommendation of the ethics committee of the lab which reviewed the project!)

The message seems clear: flirting is more likely to have a positive outcome on sunny days. But Professor Gu?guen was careful to include certain caveats regarding the applicability of the research to everyday situations: the sunshine (or other factors) may after all have improved the attractive 20 year old male's flirting skills on those days. Other atmospheric conditions such as windiness or humidity were not accounted for. And, perhaps most crucially, the research was conducted in France, where 'men traditionally approach women in romantic relationships'.

The journal article concludes with suggestions for further study in this area -- for instance, are men themselves more likely to initiate flirting behaviour when the sun is shining? We'll have to wait until the Spring to find out!

NCAA announces problems with Miami investigation

FILE - In this Jan. 17, 2013, file photo, NCAA President Mark Emmert speaks at the organization's annual convention in Grapevine, Texas. The NCAA is revealing that it has found "an issue of improper conduct" within its own enforcement program during its investigation into the compliance practices of Miami's athletic department. Emmert has ordered an external review of the enforcement program. Miami will not receive its notice of allegations until that review is complete. (AP Photo/LM Otero, File)

(AP) ? The NCAA's probe of Miami's athletic compliance practices is ramping up again.

Only this time, the Hurricanes aren't exactly the subject of the inquiry.

In a bizarre twist, the college sports' governing body is being investigated after NCAA President Mark Emmert acknowledged on Wednesday "a very severe issue of improper conduct" by former investigators working the long, complex Miami case.

The NCAA said its investigation was based, at least in part, on information that it should not have had access to, the testimony of those who appeared under subpoena to be deposed in the bankruptcy case involving former Miami booster Nevin Shapiro, one of the most notorious Ponzi scheme architects in history.

The NCAA does not have subpoena power. Shapiro's attorney did, and used it ? and apparently entered into some sort of contractual agreement with the NCAA, one that apparently either was not or should never have been approved.

"We cannot have the NCAA bringing forward an allegation ... that was collected by processes none of us could stand for," Emmert said. "We're going to move it as fast as possible, but we have to get this right."

Speaking Thursday from Providence, R.I. in a telephone interview, Shapiro's attorney, Maria Elena Perez, told The Associated Press that she has done nothing wrong.

"The dubious party is not me. What I have done is 150 percent above board," Perez said.

Perez said she could not divulge the nature of whatever her contract status with the NCAA, though said she is planning to release a statement in the coming days after meeting with her own attorney.

"I am a victim of the enforcement staff," said Perez, who is a Miami graduate. "Me."

The revelations Wednesday mean the notice of allegations against Miami ? the NCAA's findings of wrongdoing, a document that was nearly completed and was expected to be released by the end of this week ? will be delayed for at least a few more weeks, if not longer. The long-term ramifications could be more damning for the NCAA, especially if the outside investigator they have commissioned to look into the mess finds more problems.

"As we have done since the beginning, we will continue to work with the NCAA and now with their outside investigator hoping for a swift resolution of the investigation and our case," Miami President Donna Shalala said.

Emmert said two depositions are involved in this allegation of improper conduct by former enforcement-office staffers. One of those two depositions was given Dec. 19, 2011, by former Miami equipment-room staffer Sean Allen ? who has been linked to Shapiro and many of the allegations that he made against the university.

Among the questions Allen was asked in that deposition:

? "Did you ever witness Mr. Shapiro paying any money to any University of Miami football or basketball players?"

? "Would it be fair to say that Mr. Shapiro did, in fact, confer various financial benefits on the University of Miami Athletic Program and its players?"

? "Did you ever overhear any of the coaches or any other staff for the University of Miami providing Mr. Shapiro with inside information regarding, you know, the condition of any particular athlete for the purposes of Mr. Shapiro's gambling?"

It's unknown which of Allen's answers caught the NCAA investigators' attention.

What is known publicly now, and has been suspected by some for months, is that those investigators never should have known those questions were asked.

"How in the world can you get this far without it being recognized that this was an inappropriate way to proceed?" Emmert asked.

That's the question that the NCAA wants answered, and fast.

Emmert spoke angrily at times during a half-hour conference call to discuss the findings, in which he revealed that he briefed the NCAA's executive committee and the Division I board presidents with some information about the Miami matter. He said he developed a better understanding of what went on in the days that followed, which led to the hiring of Kenneth L. Wainstein of the firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP to conduct the external review of what happened.

Wainstein, Emmert said, will begin his probe on Thursday, with the NCAA hoping that he can finish within two weeks.

"We want to make sure that any evidence that's brought forward is appropriately collected and it has the integrity that we expect and demand," Emmert said.

It was part of a stunning day for Hurricane athletics: The 25th-ranked men's basketball team routed No. 1 Duke later Wednesday, 90-63.

Emmert said the NCAA was trying to find out why part of the investigation was based on depositions specific to the bankruptcy case against Shapiro, who will have to repay $82.7 million to his victims as part of his sentence. And the timing of this also is curious. Several people who were to be named in the NCAA's notice of allegations against Miami have been told that the document was in the final stages of preparation ? and one person who spoke with the AP said at least one person who was to face a charge of wrongdoing was told the letter was scheduled for delivery to Miami on Tuesday.

Now it's anyone's guess when that will happen.

Emmert said the NCAA learned of the alleged misconduct, in part, through legal bills presented by Shapiro's attorney for work that was not properly approved by the organization's general counsel's office.

"One of the questions that has to be answered, unequivocally, is what was the nature of that contractual arrangement and what was all the activity that that individual was involved with," Emmert said. "There is some uncertainty about all of that and it's one of the first orders of business for the firm that we've hired to investigate."

The Hurricanes' athletic compliance practices have been probed by the NCAA for nearly two years. Allegations of wrongdoing involving Miami's football and men's basketball programs became widely known in August 2011 when Yahoo Sports published accusations brought by Shapiro, who is serving a 20-year term in federal prison for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme.

Miami has self-imposed two football postseason bans in response to the investigation. The Hurricanes also would have played in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game this past season, meaning they could have qualified for the Orange Bowl.

"In my two-and-a-half years I've certainly never seen anything like this, and don't want to see it again," Emmert said.

What is a Music Business Manager? | Musician Coaching

Jonas Goldstein is a certified public accountant (CPA) and a business manager with over 20 years of experience in the music industry. A lifelong music fan, he got his start in the music business when he was a student at Syracuse University and ran the school?s entertainment organization. When he graduated, he accepted a position with the entertainment-focused accounting firm Prager and Fenton as an assistant, eventually working his way up to tour accountant, then band and artist business manager. After 13 years with the company, he branched out on his own and launched JLG Business Management. During his career as a business manager, he has handled tours for bands and artists in all different genres, including The Bee Gees, Clint Black, Ben Folds, KISS and ACDC in North America, Japan, Australia and all over the world.

?

?38e13c7(2)

?

I had the opportunity to talk to Jonas about his experience in the music industry and the many important roles of a business manager. He also shared some tips on how bands just starting out can handle the fine points of their own business management prior to having the budget to hire a professional. ????

?

Musician Coaching:

?

Thanks so much for taking some time to talk to me, Jonas. How did you get into the music business?

?

JG:

?

I?m a CPA and a business manager in the music industry, and I have over 20 years of experience. I got the music bug when I was in college at Syracuse University. I was in charge of the entertainment organization there.

?

When I graduated, I was pretty much looking for firms that specialized in entertainment. This company Prager and Fenton originally hired me, and I ended up being there for 13 years. I started out with them as an assistant, then worked my way up as a tour accountant and then a business manager with them. While I was there, I did five tours for ACDC and worked with KISS, Clint Black and The Bee Gees. As a business manager, I worked with Ben Folds and Kid Rock for a while. I managed people in rock, jazz and all different genres.

?

I?m very diverse in my musical taste, and I enjoy it when my clientele is all across the board. It makes everything more fun.

?

Musician Coaching:

?

I remember meeting you probably 15 or 16 years ago. And you were introduced to me as a business manager, but I really didn?t know the difference between a regular manager and a business manager. I would imagine that?s a pretty common mistake. What exactly us the role of a business manager?

?

JG:

?

The business manager is an accountant and then some. I?m a CPA. There are a lot of business managers out there who are not licensed, but I really feel that a business manager should be. I started out with ACDC. In addition to filing tax returns and all the other basic things an accountant might do for a band, they also set up things related to tours. We evaluate the tours, make up budgets for them, set up insurance programs, cut deals with buses, trucks and sound and light companies. We also often do projections on touring budgets for record companies.??

?

Musician Coaching:

?

And these are all the nuts and bolts elements that are so important, without which the whole machine would break down. Yet a lot of bands wouldn?t even think about all this.

?

JG:

?

Yes. It?s a very all-encompassing job. It?s not just being an accountant; we?re the liaison for almost everything. We also have to manage costs between management and the business management, because the business manager actually works for the band exclusively. And, of course, the different tasks for which I am responsible can also vary significantly band to band.

?

Musician Coaching:

?

And, you told me that you usually work for percentages or a monthly retainer, meaning you?re not likely to work with artists just starting out that have a very small budget, because they?re not bringing in a lot of income yet. What is your criteria for working with a band?

?

JG:

?

From my perspective, a lot of it is about passion. There are some bands I just love personally and want to see them succeed, even if they are baby bands. Sometimes they?ll experience restructuring or will be in political turmoil, and they will find themselves structuring. I need to feel passionate and really gung ho about all the bands I work with, so I?ll have the energy and will be able to fight for them as long as I can. I don?t cut deals with record companies personally, but I will often look at the contracts and give advice as they grow.

?

Musician Coaching:

?

Obviously, your ideal client is someone you are passionate about. But what advice would you give these types of bands about how to make sure their books are in order and everything is in place from a business perspective before they are able to hire someone like you?

?

JG:

?

The start of it is to set up an LLC or a Sub S Corporation, depending on the situation of the band. Say the band lives in Atlantic. Then, we can set up the LLC in Georgia. If everyone lives there, all the income can flow through that point, and taxes can be filed in the same state. If you have a band that is scattered all over the place with someone in Nashville or Austin and another person in Seattle, they might want to look at other options. But the first thing they need to look at is where they are all located.

?

However, with bands that are located overseas, there?s another option for setting up an LLC or a Sub S Corporation:? Delaware. Younger bands outside the U.S. can set up a U.S. entity as a Delaware Corporation. In general, however, as a business manager I always examine which type of company would best suit the band right from the get-go. ?

?

Musician Coaching:

?

And why is Delaware such a go-to state for LLCs, etc.?

?

JG:

?

With Delaware on the East Coast and also with Nevada in the West, there are no personal taxes. What you do is pay a monthly fee rather than setting up a very complicated tax system. It comes out to about $250 per year as opposed to dealing with another state, where it could cost you much more. However, for U.S. citizens it?s hard to set up in Delaware.

?

And I?ve had some disagreements about this next point. But if you?re a multi-state band, you have a band that tours all over. Some states are more aggressive than others about getting your taxes. When you tour around, a lot of the places you play have very strict regulations. So, you need to closely follow budgets and file them to reduce your taxes. For example, in Wisconsin, they?re going to take six percent out of your wage. In Massachusetts, they take $450-$600. In California, they take seven percent. In Minnesota, they take two percent. Of course, the list of tax laws goes on and on.

?

I?ve definitely had discussions with other business managers who don?t believe you necessarily have to file in every state. For example, states like New York and New Jersey don?t take any money out for taxes on tours at all. Connecticut does. But you can file a budget to these people, and your rates will come down. I usually take the stance that as an artist or band, you should file whenever you appear in a certain state, just for your own protection.

?

Musician Coaching:

?

Based on what you know about accounting, what kind of bookkeeping practices do you suggest bands just starting out follow to ensure they stay organized?

?

JG:

?

For example, I advise young bands to avoid filing an LLC in New York, because that state has very strict policies. It costs $2,000 ? $2,500 up front to set up the LLC, and and then you have to advertise your LLC formation in a law journal for six weeks.

?

For New York-based young bands, what I usually do is file a Sub S election, which is a lot cheaper. When you?re running your own band and just starting out, $2,000 is a lot of money.

?

In terms of bookkeeping, I like to keep things really simple. You get a bank account, and then you manage everything on QuickBooks. It?s effective, user friendly and gives you a lot of tools like balance and budget sheets and ways to manage your daily transactions ? which are all things you should be doing. You also need to bank reconcile every month to make sure your cash is where it should be.

?

There?s another package that other business managers use that is very intricate and shall remain nameless. They say the statements look better, but I think it?s too much work and aggravation without training. You can do pretty much anything you need to do as a young band on QuickBooks.

?

Musician Coaching:

?

Given that most bands and startups are operating at a loss, is there advice you could give about tax write offs to minimize the impact?

?

JG:

?

If there?s a loss from your tour, you record a loss, and you don?t pay taxes. For example, let?s say you had a $2,000 loss on your tour that you did in 2011. In 2012, you might have a profit of $5,000. You can take your $2,000 loss and carry it forward, and you?ll end up with $3,000 and won?t have to pay money out the year after either.

?

Musician Coaching:

?

Let?s say you have a day job. Can your career as an aspiring musician be a way to pay less taxes overall?

?

JG:

?

Recording the day job is just a quick W-2. Just be aware of what?s going on and make sure you?re using your business sense. In my experience, in most bands, there?s typically one guy who is a lot savvier when it comes to the business end of things and taxes. That?s the guy you want to put in charge of recording and managing finances. But, musicians beware:? the IRS requires you to take a competency test to handle all this on your own if you?re not a CPA or an attorney.

?

But, some general advice:? In the beginning, you want to save as much money as you can. And you want to consult with a business manager as a lawyer. Then, start to build your support team as you start to make more money and see what you can do. But as a musician, you don?t want to get into a situation where you suddenly realize you owe $2,000 in taxes and everything is a disaster.

?

I?m sure that you agree with me on this next point, Rick. The way to get your band signed and to flourish is to get out there, tour extensively, get a mailing list and then write a record. If you sell 50,000 or 60,000 units, the labels will find you. It?s like when I was working with both moe and Umprhey?s McGee. They were bands that didn?t sell a lot of records, but they toured and played all over. Both had started while they were in college and just expanded.

?

Of course, every band is different. A commercial success like Katy Perry or someone of that level is going to present a completely different business situation. You don?t really need to tour out, but you have to have somebody to stand by you and help market yourself.

?

Musician Coaching:

?

I?m actually really surprised that labels aren?t literally opening up bands? financial books and deciding whether to sign them or not based on the amount of income coming in and how solvent their company is. It?s definitely a changing eco system in terms of how people are getting acquired by labels, management and publishers.

?

JG:

?

Out of curiosity, in the work you do with marketing, in the last five years, have you seen a greater understanding by the labels of how technology has changed the music landscape?

?

Musician Coaching:

?

Some get it more than others. It?s a different game. And this really goes back to what I was just saying about being surprised that more people at the top aren?t looking at bands? financial records. In the past, people often complained about the lack of artist development at labels. And it seems like that same challenge still exists today, possibly to an even greater degree. Labels seem to still be looking at the number of albums a band is selling and whether or not the band has a manager, then project the risk they are willing to take, then sign the band. I can?t think of the last time I heard of someone just getting picked based purely on the music alone.

?

I think labels definitely have a lot more analytics for artists at their disposal now and are starting to actually analyze them. They don?t necessarily move quickly, but that?s typically because they are working within the machine of a much larger company.?

?

JG:

?

And I?ve noticed that what they?re trying to do now ? and I think all types of management want to get away from this ? is do a 360 deal. They want to take a greater percentage of an artist?s record contract, touring, publishing, merchandising, etc.; they want everything.

?

Musician Coaching:

?

And I?ve heard of them going back and trying to put 360 deals in place on existing contracts too.

?

I know labels are taking initiatives to transition, but I?m unsure as to how effective their efforts have been thus far. And I think ultimately in this technological climate, management is in many cases becoming a lot more powerful and beneficial to artists than labels.

?

JG:

?

My feeling is that what you should do as an artist if you want to attach yourself to a label is pretty simple:? go out there and build a fan base. If it takes you two years, fine. They?ll find you if you start selling a lot of units of your music and sell out at bigger venues either regionally or across the company. It?s a lot of work, commitment and focus, but if bands keep showing they can build a lucrative business for themselves, they can hopefully stop labels from trying to push some of these deals that will ultimately be detrimental to the artist.

A meeting is being held on Wednesday 30 January at The Old Rectory in?Wem starting at 6pm for local business people to come along and be involved in shaping a new business network Wem and the surrounding area.?

Wem Rural Parish Councillor Richard Powell, explained:

?Since the successful Wem Business Fair held last October there has been a growing interest in setting up a business network.? At the meeting we will be identifying where the common interests are and what projects and actions should be pursued for the mutual benefit of businesses across the town and its surrounding area. Longer term, this should give businesses in and around Wem a louder voice, greater opportunity to influence decisions and drive progress on the best ideas for maximising Wem?s potential as a centre to do business.?

Shropshire Councillor Pauline Dee, added:

?I would like to encourage all local business people to come along as we want to bring together businesses of all kinds, whether they?re based in Wem, Northwood or Coton and in a high street shop, office, industrial unit or their own home. Different issues will matter to different types of business, but we can only find out how much if we get voices from across the board.?

The only thing stopping the Sacramento Kings from a sale and move to Seattle is approval by NBA owners.

The Maloof family has agreed to sell the Kings to a Seattle group led by investor Chris Hansen, the league confirmed in a statement Monday morning. The deal is still pending a vote by the NBA Board of Governors.

A person familiar with the decision said that Hansen's group will buy 65 percent of the franchise for $525 million, move the team to Seattle and restore the SuperSonics name. The Maloofs will have no stake in the team.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was waiting approval.

The sale figure is a total valuation of the franchise, which includes relocation fees. Hansen's group also is hoping to buy out other minority investors.

The Maloofs will get a $30 million non-refundable down payment by Feb. 1, according to the deal, one person said. They will still be allowed to receive other offers until the league approves the sale.

The plan by Hansen's group is to have the team play at least the next two seasons in KeyArena before moving into a new facility in downtown Seattle. The deadline for teams to apply for a move for next season is March 1.

"We have always appreciated and treasured our ownership of the Kings and have had a great admiration for the fans and our team members. We would also like to thank Chris Hansen for his professionalism during our negotiation. Chris will be a great steward for the franchise," Kings co-owner Gavin Maloof said in a statement on behalf of the family.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said last week he had received permission from NBA Commissioner David Stern to present a counteroffer to league owners from buyers who would keep the Kings in Sacramento.

Johnson, himself a former All-Star point guard in the NBA, said in a statement that the city remained undeterred despite the agreement with the Seattle group.

"Sacramento has proven that it is a strong NBA market with a fan base that year in and year out has demonstrated a commitment to the Kings by selling out 19 of 27 seasons in a top 20 market and owning two of the longest sellout streaks in NBA history," Johnson said.

"When it comes to keeping the team in our community, Sacramento is playing to win. In particular, we have been focused like a laser on identifying an ownership group that will both have the financial resources desired by the NBA and the vision to make the Kings the NBA equivalent of what the Green Bay Packers have been in the NFL."

In a saga that has dragged on for nearly three years, Johnson and Sacramento appear to be facing their most daunting challenge yet.

Hansen, a Seattle native and San Francisco-based investor, reached agreement with local governments in Seattle last October on plans to build a $490 million arena near the city's other stadiums, CenturyLink Field and Safeco Field.

As part of the agreement, no construction will begin until all environmental reviews are completed and a team has been secured.

Hansen's group is expected to pitch in $290 million in private investment toward the arena, along with helping to pay for transportation improvements in the area around the stadiums.

The plans also call for the arena to be able to handle a future NHL franchise.

The remaining $200 million in public financing would be paid back with rent money and admissions taxes from the arena, and if that money falls short, Hansen would be responsible for making up the rest.

Other investors in the proposed arena include Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer and two members of the Nordstrom department store family.

Hansen's goal has been to return the SuperSonics to the Puget Sound after they were moved from Seattle to Oklahoma City in 2008. Asked in September if he could envision a team being in Seattle for the 2013 season, Hansen was cautious about finding an option that quickly.

The Kings' sale price would top the NBA-record $450 million the Golden State Warriors sold for in July 2010.

"While we are not at liberty to discuss the terms of the transaction or our plans for the franchise given the confidential nature of the agreement and NBA regulations regarding public comments during a pending transaction, we would just like to extend our sincerest compliments and gratitude toward the Maloof family," Hansen said in a statement. "Our negotiations with the family were handled with the utmost honor and professionalism and we hope to continue their legacy and be great stewards of this NBA franchise in the coming years and decades."

Brothers Joe, Gavin and George Maloof bought controlling interests in the franchise from Los Angeles-based developer Jim Thomas in 1999. The Maloofs, who have long waited for an upgrade to the team's outdated arena, backed out of a tentative $391 million deal for a new downtown building with Sacramento last year, reigniting fears the franchise could relocate.

Johnson and the Kings broke off all negotiations in the summer, with the team's owners saying the deal didn't make financial sense for the franchise.

In 2011, the Kings appeared determined to move to Anaheim before Johnson convinced the NBA to give the city one last chance to help finance an arena.

At one point, Johnson seemed so certain the team was gone he called the process a "slow death" and compared the city's efforts to keep the Kings a "Hail Mary."

Johnson made a pitch to the NBA Board of Governors in April 2011, promising league owners the city would find a way to help finance a new arena to replace the team's current outdated suburban facility. That pitch bought the Kings time, before the brokered deal between the city and the Maloofs fell apart last year.

mdilko20: Art & Astrology: Chart and talent of Placido Domingo

Placido Domingo is a Spanish tenor and director with a very typical voice. Performers in the arts need artistic talents just as the creators of art do. In this case, there is a different astrological pattern than usual. Usually Moon, Venus and Neptune are connected with Midheaven and each other, supported by the signs that they rule (Cancer, Libra, Taurus and Pisces). In the chart of Placido Domingo we see:

a. a prominent Neptune (Neptune is 'calling', no mayor aspect in orb 5 degrees or in sign; and square Sun/Moon.?It means that he was motivated for the arts, very much, at any kind of level, somehow, anyhow)

b. the moon stands right in the middle of Venus and Neptune. In other words: Venus/Neptune is conjunct the Moon.

c. There are minor aspects between Moon and Venus and Neptune. They are connected by septiles (1/7th of the circle). Moon/Venus is in aspect with Ascendant and Midheaven.
The septile is considered to mirror the energy that inspires us and others.

His chart doesn't immediately show the singer, unless you use this:

Mercury (communications, voice and pen) ruler of the Midheaven is in the 5th house of plays, games and shows, exactly square ruler 5 (plays) = Saturn (business).

Then you see the business of singing for entertainment.

But what must I do with that Mars on the IC? It may be an AA rated chart but I wonder ... Well, the story of his HOB is on Astrodienst:?http://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Domingo,_Pl?cido

home improvement | roofing repairs and replacement

So, you?ve bought your first home. Congratulations! This can be an exciting and overwhelming time in your life. It seems as though there is so much to do with all of the unpacking and settling in, not to mention taking care of all the little home improvements that you want to check off your list. As fun as it can be to personalize your home, be sure to keep some of your budget for the bigger priorities that may come up. One such project is ensuring that your roof is in good condition.

If you had a home inspection done prior to purchasing your new home, the inspector may have found problems with the roof and recommended roof repairs or complete replacement. You should address those problems as soon as possible. If you did not have an inspection carried out, you can do a preliminary visual inspection yourself or call in a roofing contractor to take a look at the roof for you.

Replacing a roof can be quite expensive but putting it off can be even more costly in the long run if you end up with water damage in your home. All types of roofing materials will have a specific lifespan and will need to be replaced at some point. However, in some cases, your roof may just need some repairs that would, in fact, prolong how long it lasts. Getting smaller issues taken care of early on can save you a lot of money and hassle in the long run.

Signs that your roof needs attention:
? Loose or missing shingles
? Damaged, cracked, curled shingles
? Moss or algae growth on the roof
? Shingle decay, sometimes demonstrated by crumbling or the presence of mold or mildew
? Ice buildup or ice damming on the roof in the winter
? Water in the attic after heavy rains
? Spots or stains on interior ceilings or walls

If your roof is demonstrating any of the above signs, make it a priority to have it repaired of replaced. For more information regarding roof repair or roof replacement, talk to your local professional roofer and get their opinion on the state of your home?s roof.

Check back next week for the next installment in our New Home Owner Mondays series. If there are any new homeowner topics that you?d like us to address, leave us a note in the comments section below.

Look people, if we have to spend every day together, we might as ...

Karen presents part two in our discussion on our relationships with our co-workers!

Relationships with co-workers are some of the most frustrating relationships in our lives. Unlike friends, we don?t get to choose our co-workers. As Jim mentioned, they are sometimes more like family, functional or dysfunctional. They are thrust upon us and we have to spend the majority of our waking hours in their presence. This means they have the potential to either be some of the most satisfying relationships we have or some of the most frustrating relationships we have.

As Jim also mentioned, the biggest mistake people can make is trying to get their personal needs met within their relationships as work! I have reminded several friends over the years who were disappointed in work relationships that the real reason we work, is to make money or to further a cause we believe in, but not to make friends. Actually making connections and friends at work is a bonus. We are blessed when it happens but it should never be our goal in the workplace.

Jim said he has met almost all of his closest friends at work. This has been true for me on several occasions. In fact, I have been lucky enough in every job I?ve ever had, to leave with at least one, really good, lifelong friendship. I think the key is in the type of work you do. Do you have a job you don?t really enjoy, and just go to every day, punch in, do your work, punch out and leave? Or do you have a job you love and feel passionate about? If so, it is likely a place that will also attract other people who love and feel passionate about their work with whom you will form great friendships. These are the easy relationships. These are the people you can enjoying working with on a common goal.

The more difficult relationships are with those people that we don?t share a passion with. In fact, it may be hard to find anything in common with some people at work other than a need to be in the same building every day together. This does not, however, mean that we shouldn?t at least try to relate to them or try to improve the relationship. Doing so will only help all of our days go just a little more smoothly. Whether or not you like someone or can relate to them effects your ability to meet your common goals on the job, so these are the relationships that, rather than trying to avoid or ignore, you really have to focus on improving.

I realize in some organizations this can be more difficult than in others. Some places have a culture of competition. In some companies back biting, and trying to step over each other on the way to the top is encouraged. If this is the case, and you aren?t comfortable with that environment, and you don?t see a way to improve it, then maybe it?s time for you to consider moving on. I have been in those situations, I understand the difficulty of uprooting and leaving a position that may seem secure.

However, we need to remember we are charge of our own personal fulfillment and happiness and sometimes taking leap of faith like that, into a new job or career, will be one of the greatest decisions we ever make!

As with any relationship, the key here is communication. I recommend starting small. Saying ?good morning? to a grumpy co-worker, every single day whether it is reciprocated with any enthusiasm or not, can go a long way to making both your days more pleasant. Take an interest in what they do. Take an interest in their life outside of work. Ask questions, get to know them. Find the one thing you can relate to with a difficult coworker and build from there. There has to be something you share in common, something you can agree on. Most of the time, you will find out you actually have something unexpected in common, a shared interest or experience. You may also find out that all those times you thought they were being grumpy at you had absolutely nothing to do with you at all. They had their own stuff going on. You don?t have to end up being best friends but you do have to learn to respect each other as co-workers.

Just start with ?good morning.? I promise it helps.

Keep in mind, not everyone has the same life experiences. Not everyone grew up in the same culture. Don?t assume they should know what you mean or what you are talking about. Don?t assume they understood your intentions. Don?t assume they get it at all because they may not. In fact, don?t assume anything, just ask. Everyone needs to feel heard and respected. Clarifying goals, expectations or intentions can go a long way to improving work relationships. Also, don?t be afraid to admit when you?ve been wrong, or even kind of a pain to deal with yourself. As with all relationships saying ?I?m sorry? can fix almost any screw up.

This doesn?t mean that everyone lives happily ever after at the office. It doesn?t end all conflict but it does help to have a more pleasant work environment. It means you can work together more easily. It means everyone?s day gets just a little better.

You spend most of your waking hours with your co-workers, every week. Why not try to make that time as enjoyable as possible. If you can look at the big picture, if your goals revolve around the greater good of the entire organization rather than your own personal goals, not only will you build a really great organization but you will also, sometimes unexpectedly, and make some really great relationships with your co-workers that will last long after you?ve both moved on to other things.

Stay tuned for Karen and Jim?s next installment in their year long series on all the relationships in our lives!?

Facebook for Android update touts speedier photo viewing, ability to send voice messages

While the recently announced Graph Search has taken most Facebook-related headlines of late, let's not forget Zuckerberg himself said that mobile applications are undoubtedly one of the company's main focus areas. And although today's Android update isn't nearly as major as the one from last month, something tells us "likers" and "pokers" alike will still appreciate the new tidbits -- which include an option to share stories to Groups, Pages and Timeline, faster viewing / opening of photos, as well as a feature (relatively known, mind you) that allows for the sending of voice messages to friends straight from the app. Those eager to grab the update now should hit the Google Play link below, where the latest Android treats from the social network giant are only a mere click away.

Report: True Impact of Foundation Investments Revealed, Fuels ...

News release

Washington, D.C. - Foundation investments have a deeper and farther-reaching?economic impact in America's communities than previously understood, according to new independent research released by The Philanthropic Collaborative.?The first-of-its-kind analysis shows that foundation grantmaking supports millions of jobs, as well as billions of dollars in wages, GDP and tax revenues that extend for generations.?

The report, Economic Impacts of 2010 Foundation Grantmaking on the U.S. Economy, comes?at a critical time. Congress and the White House are debating the role of the sector and considering caps or limits on incentives that encourage charitable giving.?The report examines?the present and future impact on the U.S. economy of foundation grantmaking, which supports diverse areas such as health care, scientific research, educational opportunities, safer neighborhoods and more.

"Although public and elected officials may be familiar with specific foundation-supported charitable organizations, the broader importance of the sector to our society and the size of its impact are less well known,"?said John Tyler, chair of The Philanthropic Collaborative?and general counsel and secretary of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. "Fortunately, appreciation is growing for the far-reaching effect that foundations and charitable giving have in our communities. That is a good trend, but there is more to be done."

The study examines how foundation grants within the U.S. in 2010 ($37.85 billion) contribute to immediate and short-term job creation and wages, GDP and tax revenues. But the study goes a step further to reveal the longer-term, more substantial impacts that are difficult to measure. Using return on investment data and the well-established IMPLAN economic model, the study examines the broader impact and benefits that these investments are likely to have for grantees and in communities for decades to come.

The report reveals that the impacts of foundation grantmaking in America are vast:

Millions of jobs created

  • Nearly 500,000 jobs are created immediately following disbursement of foundation grants, expanding within about a year to nearly 1 million jobs once the grants flow through the economy.
  • At least 8.8 million jobs over the long-term. In the subsequent years after foundation investments are made, impacts build that span a generation and beyond. For example, a foundation grant to support an early childhood education initiative increases the likelihood that more young people will go to college, improve their lifetime earnings and improve their quality of life.

Billions of dollars in long-term economic activity??

Billions of dollars in long-term economic activity?
