Deactivate Facebook Home in one tap: step-by-step

SlashGear writes, If you?re thinking about picking up an HTC first device on the 12th of April, you might want to consider turning Facebook Home off. But why would I want to turn off the system that?s selling the smartphone, you might ask? Because there?s a completely clean Android Jelly Bean under that Facebook Home skin, that?s why! It?s time to deactivate Facebook Home before you even take the time to use it! All you?ve got to do inside your HTC first is head to the separate app called Facebook Settings first. From there it?s the very first option on the list ? the very first! The option?

A new rocket rises: Orbital's Antares prepared for its first test launch

Brea Reeves / NASA

Orbital Sciences Corp.'s Antares rocket rises from its launch pad at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Virginia's Wallops Island on Saturday. The first Antares launch is scheduled for no earlier than April 17.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

Orbital Sciences Corp. raised the first fully integrated Antares rocket on its Virginia launch pad on Saturday, setting the stage for its maiden flight to orbit later this month. A successful test launch would mark a giant leap toward using the Antares and Orbital's Cygnus cargo capsule to resupply the International Space Station.

If the current schedule holds, Virginia-based Orbital would become the second commercial venture to send its spacecraft to the space station later this year, following in the footsteps of California-based SpaceX. The two companies have received more than hundred of millions of dollars in development funding from NASA under the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program, or COTS.

SpaceX completed its COTS testing last year and has moved on to a series of 12 station resupply missions under the terms of a $1.6 billion contract. The second such mission, making use of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon cargo capsule, was successfully conducted last month.

This month's demonstration flight by the Antares will mark a major milestone in Orbital's COTS effort: Components of the rocket have been tested on the ground, but not yet in outer space. On Saturday, the two-stage rocket was rolled out from its integration facility at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia and transported to Launch Pad 0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport, a mile away. The Antares was then erected on the pad, where it will undergo a series of pre-launch tests.

Brea Reeves / NASA

The Antares rocket is reflected in the water as it passes over a bridge on its way to the launch pad on Saturday.

Liftoff is scheduled for no earlier than April 17. The first flight won't go to the space station, but will merely test the rocket's ability to put a dummy payload in space.??A demonstration flight of the Antares and Cygnus is slated to go to the space station later this year. If that unmanned demonstration mission is completed successfully, Orbital will begin conducting eight cargo resupply flights to the station in accordance with a $1.9 billion contract.

NASA selected SpaceX and Orbital to help fill the resupply gap left by the retirement of the space shuttle fleet in 2011. The station is also being resupplied by robotic Russian cargo capsules as well as European and Japanese transports. A separate NASA program is providing $1.1 billion in support to SpaceX, the Boeing Co. and Sierra Nevada Corp. for the development of crew-capable spaceships.

Caffeine Gum Rattles Nerves of Health Experts

Wrigley's new Alert Energy Gum has half the caffeine of a cup of coffee. (Wrigley)

?

A cup of coffee or tea is a crucial morning ritual for many Americans. Now a new line of?caffeinated?gum is?promising?to sooth?commuters?on the run but is also raising?concerns?among health?experts about the proliferation of such products.

Last month Wrigley announced they were introducing a caffeine-infused gum, called Alert Energy Gum.

With 40 mg of caffeine in every stick of gum, the Alert Energy Gum has the same amount of caffeine as approximately half a cup of coffee.

?This is something [consumers] can take with them and something that?s a little bit discrete,? said Jennifer Jackson-Luth, a Wrigley spokeswoman. ?It can fit in their pocket.?

In recent years caffeine has appeared in a wide array of products from lollipops to bottled water to shower soap. However, the rise of highly caffeinated products has raised concerns about the health risks, especially in energy drinks where caffeine doses can reach up to hundreds of milligrams per can.

Earlier this month a group of 18 doctors and public health experts petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to protect children and teens from highly caffeinated energy drinks, writing that, ?Youth with higher caffeine intake commonly report troubling neurological symptoms, including nervousness, anxiety, jitteriness, and headache.?

Dr. Donna Seger, executive director of the Tennessee Poison Center and professor of Clinical Medicine at Vanderbilt University, says 40 mg of caffeine per stick of gum is unlikely to sicken a teenager or adult, but a toddler could be affected if they manage to sneak a few too many sticks.

?The nervous system isn?t developed till you?re in your twenties,? said Seger. ?All of these stimulants can [affect an underdeveloped system.]?

Wrigley warns that the gum is not intended for children or those sensitive to caffeine and will be marketed to those over the age of 25.

As more caffeinated products come on the market, Seger says she expects that more people could become caffeine dependent and need a little extra jolt of energy to get through the day.

?If that [it] is a positive experience and you feel like it?s something you want,? said Seger of the caffeinated gum. ?You?re going to use it more and more frequently.?

5 Reasons You Shouldn?t Call Facebook Home

It?s not a ?Facebook Phone,? it?s not a Facebook operating system?it?s Facebook Home. On Thursday Mark Zuckerberg and the Facebook team laid to rest the persistent ?Facebook Phone? rumors ?and unveiled its new app family for Android. The app launcher, which is essentially a Facebook overlay for select Android Jelly Bean devices, brings Facebook to your lock screen, Home screen, messenger, and well, your entire phone. But is Facebook?s Home on Android the solution for staying connected to your favorite people, or is it more trouble than it?s worth? Here are five things to look out for before installing Facebook Home on April 12.

Other Social Networks Locked Out

Being connected to people rather than apps means integrating all of your social networks, not just Facebook. With Facebook Home, all of your other social networks are likely to be pushed into the background. During its press event on Thursday, the company made it clear that you would seamlessly receive Facebook notifications, messages, and texts directly to your Home screen. However, this could downplay (or eliminate) alerts from Google Services, Twitter, or any other networks you care about.

Creepy Floating Heads That Follow You

With Facebook?s new chat head feature, both your SMS and Facebook messages pop up on your screen no matter what you?re doing. But rather than displaying a message or notification, tiny round photos of your friends pop up and essentially follow you until you acknowledge the message. This also means that you?ll be receiving Facebook messages all the time, essentially giving all of your Facebook friends the power to text you without obtaining your phone number. Hopefully, there will be an option to go invisible.

Ads Coming to Your Home Screen

Facebook emphasized how convenient it would be to see all your social activity right on your lock screen, but left out that you?ll eventually need to navigate through ads. ?There are no ads in this yet, I?m sure that one day there will be,? Zuckerberg said to The Verge when asked about the monetization strategy for Facebook Home. Another team member reportedly confirmed that these ads would be coming to cover feed specifically, but won?t be included when Facebook Home launches.

Privacy Concerns

Facebook Home brings your newsfeed to your phone?s lock screen, which means that theoretically anyone who grabs your phone can access your Facebook account. Facebook hasn?t clarified how this feature would work if you have a lock pattern protecting your screen, but exposing your news feed makes it that much easier for others to obtain personal information about you. If your phone is left unprotected, some else could browse through posts in your feed, comment on stories, and ?Like? items in a few quick seconds.

Reliance on Profile Pictures

Facebook Home comes with a slew of features that make it easier to stay connected with friends, but others could also add to the confusion. Remember last week when everyone changed their profile photo to an equal sign in support of gay marriage? Good luck identifying that chat head when it pops up on your screen.

Baseball still lacks MLB guarantee for Olympic bid

ROME (AP) ? Baseball and softball's joint bid for Olympic reinstatement is still lacking a guarantee that major league stars would be available to play ahead of a key presentation to the IOC next month.

International Baseball Federation President Riccardo Fraccari is holding out hope that Major League Baseball will commit its players for at least the semifinals and finals of the proposed Olympic tournament, but he told The Associated Press on Wednesday that "we have to be realistic."

Baseball and softball have been out of the Olympics since 2008 and merged in a bid to return for the 2020 Games. They are competing against seven other sports for a single spot on the program.

On May 29 in St. Petersburg, Russia, the International Olympic Committee board will select one or more sports to submit for final consideration to the IOC general assembly in September.

"We need the utmost support from MLB to get past May," Fraccari said. "We're still negotiating.

"If we make it past this step there are a lot more cards to play. There are a lot of IOC members from Latin America who support baseball. The executive committee is one thing, the congress is another."

The Olympic tournaments would feature eight teams divided into two groups, with the top two finishers in each group advancing to the semifinals.

Another option Fraccari has floated is suspending the MLB All-Star Game every four years and having a break later in the season for the Olympics instead. But MLB does not appear open to that proposal.

The IOC voted in 2005 to remove baseball and softball from the Olympic program after the 2008 Beijing Games. As separate bids, the two sports both failed to return for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

However, wresting was cut in February from the 2020 Games by the IOC executive board and also will seek reinstatement.

Wrestling, which dates back to the ancient Olympics and the first modern games in 1896, has made leadership and rule changes in a bid to win reinstatement.

"It's much, much more complicated now," Fraccari said.

The others sports vying for entry are squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding, and the martial arts of karate and wushu.

The enormous insurance contracts it would require to lend out MLB players midseason is also a stumbling block.

Fraccari estimated that $18 million was spent on insurance for the recent World Baseball Classic, and even if the Olympic figure might be half that, it's still a problem.

"Who's going to pay?" he said.

Still, the bid is not dead yet, and it received a boost from the World Baseball Classic.

The Dominican Republic won the WBC by beating Puerto Rico 3-0 in the final of the 28-team tournament in San Francisco on March 19. Japan won the first two WBC titles, which started in 2006.

WBC organizers said they exceeded global broadcast and ticket sales targets this year.

"The WBC helped a lot," Fraccari said.

Fans range from giddy to somber on baseball's opening day

The 2013 baseball season officially opened last night, when the Houston Astros beat Texas, but don't tell that to the thousands of fans celebrating Opening Day today.

The Los Angeles Angels newcomer saw Cincinnati fans packed downtown and remembered making his big league debut in the same spot a while ago.

"People are lined up in the streets, there's the parade," he said. "It's just an awesome feeling. It never gets old ? opening day ? especially when you're where you started."

All across the majors, baseball was in full swing Monday.

Bryce Harper put on quite a show in Washington. The 20-year-old star hit home runs his first two times up and earned a few "M-V-P!" chants during a 2-0 win over Miami.

At Target Field in Minnesota, players and fans bundled up. It was 35 degrees with 17 mph winds as the Twins took on ace Justin Verlander and the AL champion Detroit Tigers, who won 4-2.

"It's whoever whines about it the least, I think, who'll have the best chance of winning today," Twins first baseman Justin Morneau said.

The slugger's remedy for the cold?

"Put hot sauce all over and throw some long sleeves on and some long johns and go out there and run around and enjoy it," he joked.

The hot chocolate line was 12 to 15 people deep at the ballpark while the beer vendors were generally talking among themselves.

"It's opening Day. You can't not come," said fan Ripley Peterson, dressed in six layers for the chill. "I love baseball, I love the Twins. Opening day is a special thing. Unless it's like a blizzard, I'm going to be here."

The 2013 season officially opened Sunday night when the Houston Astros beat Texas.

Most every other team was in action Monday. From old rivalries on the coasts ? Red Sox-Yankees in New York, Giants-Dodgers in Los Angeles ? there was plenty to celebrate with a dozen games.

"The three big holidays ? Thanksgiving, Christmas and opening day," LA co-owner Stan Kasten said, watching the stands at Dodger Stadium fill up before the game against World Series champion San Francisco.

A few minutes later, a stadium camera swung to Vin Scully's booth, where he's starting his 64th season, and the revered broadcaster pronounced: "It's time for Dodger baseball."

Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson was standing on the mound before the game when manager Don Mattingly came out and signaled for a reliever. In came Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax wearing his No. 32 vintage jersey, and the ol' left-hander threw out the first ball to former Dodgers ace Orel Hershiser.

It's been 40 years since the world's first mobile phone call

It's been 40 years since the world's first mobile phone call

On April 3rd 1973, Martin Cooper made the first mobile call on the nine-inch (and 28-ounce) Motorola DynaTAC. Dialing up a rival at AT&T, he apparently said that he was ringing "to see if my call sounds good at your end." While briefcase-size models had come before it, it's Motorola's truly mobile phone that became the go-to power accessory for the likes of Gordon Gekko, Zack Morris and, er, American Psycho's Patrick Bateman. Since its heyday, however, the AMPS analog networks that the phone used to run on have now largely disappeared, replaced by digital ones that have added better call clarity, not to mention data connectivity at ever-improving speeds. We've come a long way.

Watch DARPA's Robot Arms Perform The World's Slowest Pit Stop

Replacing fighter planes and reconnaissance aircraft with robotic drones turned out to be a far easier task for the military than replacing soldiers with bots. But DARPA remains determined to one day enlist robots for all military jobs, and among other research, it's working hard to develop a relatively low-cost set of artificial arms and hands that can perform everyday mundane tasks. Christians in Holy Land, Mideast celebrate Easter

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Catholics and Protestants flocked to churches to celebrate Easter on Sunday in the Holy Land and across the broader Middle East, praying, singing and rejoicing as a new pope pleaded for peace in the region.

Some Mideast Christian communities are in flux, while others feel isolated from their Muslim-majority societies. In places like Iraq, they have sometimes been the victims of bloody sectarian attacks.

At St. Joseph Chaldean Church in Baghdad, some 200 worshippers attended an Easter mass that the Rev. Saad Sirop led behind concrete blast walls and a tight security cordon. Churches have been under tighter security since a 2010 attack killed dozens.

"We pray for love and peace to spread through the world," said worshipper Fatin Yousef, 49, who arrived immaculately dressed for the holiday. She wore a black skirt, low-heeled pumps and a striped shirt and her hair tumbled in salon-created curls.

It was the first Easter since the election of Pope Francis and she and others expressed hope in their new spiritual leader. "We hope Pope Francis will help make it better for Christians in Iraq," she said.

The pope spoke of the Middle East in his first Easter message, pleading for Israelis and Palestinians to resume negotiations to "end a conflict that has lasted all too long."

He also called for peace in Iraq and in Syria. "How much blood has been shed! And how much suffering must there still be before a political solution to the crisis will be found?" Francis asked.

In Jerusalem, Catholics worshipped in the church of the Holy Sepulcher, built on a hill where tradition holds that Jesus was crucified, briefly entombed and then resurrected. The cavernous, maze-like structure is home to different churches belonging to rival sects that are crammed into different nooks and even the roof.

Clergy in white and gold robes led the service held around the Edicule, the small chamber at the core of the church marking the site of Jesus' tomb. Many foreign visitors were among the worshippers.

"It's very special," said Arthur Stanton, a visitor from Australia. "It represents the reason why we were put on this planet, and the salvation that has come to us through Jesus."

Israel's Tourism Ministry said it expects some 150,000 visitors during holy week and the Jewish festival of Passover, which coincide this year. It is one of the busiest times of the year for the local tourism industry.

Protestants held Easter ceremonies outside Jerusalem's walled Old City at the Garden Tomb, a small, enclosed green area that some identify as the site of Jesus' burial. Another service was held at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Jesus' traditional birthplace.

Catholics and Protestants, who follow the new, Gregorian calendar, celebrate Easter on Sunday. Orthodox Christians, who follow the old, Julian calendar, will mark it in May.

There are no precise numbers on how many Christians there are in the Middle East. Census figures showing the size of religious and ethnic groups are hard to obtain.

Christian populations are thought to be shrinking or at least growing more slowly than their Muslim compatriots in much of the Middle East, largely due to emigration as they leave for better opportunities and to join families abroad. Some feel more uncomfortable amid growing Muslim majorities that they see as becoming more outwardly pious and politically Islamist over the decades.

The situation for some Mideast Christians is in flux.

In Syria, Christians, who make up some 10 percent of the country's 23 million people, have mostly stayed on the sidelines of the two-year civil war. While outraged by the regime of Bashar Assad's brutal efforts to quash the opposition, they are equally frightened by the Islamist rhetoric of many rebels and their heavy reliance on extremist fighters.

Christians make up some 10 percent of Egypt's 85 million people. Human rights groups say the police under former authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak rarely took the needed steps to prevent flare-ups of violence against Christians, a situation that persisted since he was overthrown in 2011. The rise of Islamists in Egypt has emboldened extremists to target churches and Coptic property, leading to a spike in attacks and sometimes unprecedented steps like the evacuation of entire Christian populations from villages.

In Libya, most Christians are Egyptian laborers who are working in the oil-rich country. Tensions rose last month after assailants torched a church in the eastern city of Benghazi and militias arrested some 100 Christians, mostly Egyptian, accusing them of proselytizing.

In Iraq, Christians have suffered repeated attacks by Islamic militants since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, and hundreds of thousands have left the country. Church officials estimate that the Christian communities have shrunk by at least half. The worst attack was at Baghdad's soaring Our Lady of Salvation church in October 2010 that killed more than 50 worshippers and wounded scores of others.

There currently are an estimated 400,000 to 600,000 Christians in Iraq, with most belonging to ancient eastern churches. Some two-thirds of Iraq's Christians are Catholics of the Chaldean church and the smaller Assyrian Catholic church. Members of both churches chant in dialects of ancient Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke.

Yousef, the worshipper in Baghdad, said lingering fear pushed her to send her son to live with relatives in Arizona last year. Yousef said she was arranging for her other daughter and son to immigrate.

"There's still fear here, and there's no stability in this country," she said.

Iraqi officials have made efforts to secure churches since the violence of 2010.

High blast walls topped with wire netting and barbed wire surrounded the St. Joseph Church in Baghdad's middle-class district of Karradeh. Four Iraqi Christian volunteers stood at the church entrance, double-checking the people entering. And blue-khaki clad Iraqi police guarded roads surrounding the church and checked papers of passers-by as worshippers filed inside.

White-robed church volunteers marched down the church aisle behind Father Sirop, who waved incense and chanted in the white-painted church adorned with three ornate chandeliers and a series of simple paintings illustrating the life of Christ.

Worshippers stood for lengthy passages of Sirop's mass, at one point bursting into applause when he told them, "Celebrate! You are Christians!"

YouTube API will allow video games to more easily stream in-game content

YouTube tweaks will allow video games to more easily stream ingame content

What's YouTube doing at the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco? Talking about integration with video games, obviously. More specifically, the company is hoping to expand an idea we first noticed in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, whereby users could easily stream in-game content to YouTube. Clearly, the company worked in concert with Activision to make that possible, but forthcoming APIs will enable game developers far and wide to add the same functionality to other titles. Unfortunately, details remain murky regarding availability, but we are told that these new tools won't be limited to just consoles -- it sounds as if PC and mobile games will too be able to take advantage.

Picking a Contractor that Won't Leave You High and Dry | Archadeck ...

Over the past month I?ve been spending a lot of time reading and looking at the Archadeck Dream Backyard Makeover submissions and themes have started to emerge. One that seems to be recurring is homeowners being left high and dry by their deck contractors.

deck construction

Make sure you pick a contractor that will complete the backyard of your dreams, without hassle

Several entries have shown (including one of our February finalists) decks that are half or barely finished. The descriptions reference a contractor that they found out wasn?t licensed and the building they did do wasn?t to code. It?s no wonder why so many homeowners are hesitant to invite contractors to do projects on their home.

Deck construction is a serious topic that can lead to personal injury or damage to the home when done incorrectly. To ensure that the person you hire is going to treat your property as if it were they own, make sure that you ask all of your candidates these questions:

What?s your contractor license number? Many homeowners ask prospective contractors if they are licensed, but reading the contest entries has made me realize that sometimes people lie. You should be able to get the contractor license number from the people you are thinking of working with. That way, if something happens, you have it on file.

How are you insured? A good contractor has the appropriate insurance to protect you against damage that is done to or on your property. If something happens, it shouldn?t have to go through your homeowner?s insurance.

Will you pull the local building permits and have them on file? Any structures built on your property need to be built to the local code. Permits must be pulled and inspections must be made (sometimes a few times during the building phase). ?A contractor who is good at patio and deck construction will do this for you, but you should have access to permit numbers if needed.

What warranties do you have? No one wants to invest is a large home improvement project just to have ?it break or fail. It?s even worse when there is nothing you can do about it. ?At Archadeck Outdoor Living, we pride ourselves one having 2 guarantees to protect our clients. Additionally, if you have an issue with the material, we will work with you to get in touch with the manufacturers to look at their warranties.

Could I have some references? It?s understandable that homeowners are careful about who they invite into their home. Every deck contractor should have a list of clients that you can reach out to and ask questions.

Asking these questions will help you to choose a deck construction provider that you know you can trust. If you have questions regarding our process, please contact your local Archadeck Outdoor Living office.

Syracuse Football Players Arrested For Stealing 19-in TV, XBOX, 2 iPods & Video Games

syracuse-arrested

According to Syracuse.com:

Four students arraigned in City Court this morning on burglary and larceny charges were held in jail on $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond each after appearing before Judge Karen Uplinger.

Junior football players Davon Walls (above, left) and Markus Pierce-Brewster are accused of stealing about $950 worth of electronics, including a 19-inch television, XBOX gaming system, two iPods and several video games.

Pierce-Brewster, a junior defensive end for the Orange, acted as a ?lookout? while Walls entered an unlocked apartment on Winding Ridge Road around 1:15 p.m., according to court papers.

Of course these two are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, but the university has surveillance video of the burglary. Of course this comes just days after the Alabama football program was rocked by a illegal use of a credit card to buy snacks ring.

More background: Pierce-Brewster is a fan of SportsNation, Disturbed, College Humor and It?s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

The bad news is that these two Syracuse brahs will now lose their huge scholarships, will be kicked out of school, have to pay court costs and be sent home to get real jobs.

Hope that 19-incher was worth it, boys.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ? Malaysian security forces gunned down 31 Filipino intruders in Borneo on Thursday, the highest number of casualties in a single day since nearly 200 members of a Philippine Muslim clan took over an entire village last month, police said.

The armed clansmen have wreaked political havoc for both Malaysia and the neighboring Philippines by trying to stake a long-dormant royal territorial claim to Malaysia's sprawling, resource-rich state of Sabah in Borneo.

Most of the Filipinos had eluded capture in a coastal Sabah district filled with palm oil plantations and forested hills after Malaysian forces attacked them with airstrikes and mortar fire on Tuesday.

Police and military forces tracking them waged a fierce gunbattle that ended in the deaths of 31 clansmen Thursday, national police chief Ismail Omar said, adding that no Malaysians were injured.

Ismail said at least 52 Filipinos have now been killed in the past week since hostilities in the Sabah security crisis escalated. Eight policemen also were fatally shot by the Filipino clansmen and their allies last week in various parts of Sabah.

Less than two hours before the announcement of the casualties, Prime Minister Najib Razak rejected a cease-fire call by Philippine-based members of the clan led by Jamalul Kiram III, who claims to be the sultan, or hereditary ruler, of the southern, predominantly Muslim province of Sulu in the Philippines.

A brother of Kiram, the sultan who lives in Manila, is heading the group in Sabah. Kiram had ordered them to observe a unilateral cease-fire starting Thursday afternoon by holding their current position and taking a defensive posture.

"We are showing to the whole world that first the sultan wants to resolve this peacefully," Abraham Idjirani, a Philippine-based representative for the clansmen, said earlier Thursday. He could not immediately be reached to comment on the police announcement.

Najib responded by saying Malaysia would accept only unconditional surrender by the clansmen, who slipped into Sabah by sea around Feb. 9.

"They have to surrender their arms. They have to do it as soon as possible," Najib said at a nationally televised news conference.

"Don't believe this offer of a cease-fire by Jamalul Kiram," Malaysian Defense Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi wrote on Twitter. "For the sake of the people of Sabah and Malaysia, eliminate all militants first."

Idjirani said a cease-fire would be in line with a statement of concern by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon late Wednesday.

Ban "urges an end to the violence and encourages dialogue among all the parties for a peaceful resolution of the situation," according to the statement issued by Ban's representative.

Ban voiced concerns about how the crisis might affect civilians, including Filipino migrants in Sabah, and urged "all parties to facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance and act in full respect of international human rights norms and standards," according to the statement.

Malaysia's government has insisted it made every effort to coax the Filipinos to leave and had to use force after the group fatally shot two policemen last week. Six other police officers were ambushed and killed by other Filipinos believed to be linked to the clansmen in another Sabah district.

The Filipinos say Sabah belonged to their royal sultanate for more than a century and should be handed back. Malaysia has dismissed their claim to the state, which has been part of Malaysia for five decades.

An estimated 800,000 Filipinos, mostly Muslims from insurgency-plagued southern provinces, have settled in Sabah over the years to seek work and stability.

Asia stocks rise after Dow hits new all-time high

(AP) ? The Dow's new all-time high and better economic data from the United States propelled Asian stock markets higher Wednesday.

Markets continued to shrug off a budget impasse among political leaders in Washington. Automatic government budget cuts took effect Friday after President Barack Obama and Congress failed to reach a budget deal. Economists expect the $85 billion in cuts to hurt U.S. economic growth.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index jumped 1.3 percent to 11,837.12. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.7 percent to 22,721.18. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.3 percent to 2,021.82. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 1 percent to 5,127.20. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia and mainland China rose.

Analysts said markets were taking their cues from Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, who has overseen a campaign of massive bond-buying to support the world's biggest economy after the 2008 financial crisis. The issuance of bonds has pushed their prices down, steering investors toward stocks. The program known as "quantitative easing" is in its third phase, which is dubbed QE3.

"The lesson is clear. Don't bet on Capitol Hill. Bet on Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke instead. To be sure, it was Bernanke's reassurance, as last week's congressional testimonies on monetary policy, to keep QE3 on its present course that turned a worried stock market into a record high," said analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 125.95 points, or 0.9 percent, to close at 14,253.77 ? more than double its low of 6,547 in March 2009. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1 percent to 1,539.79. The Nasdaq composite rose 1.3 percent, to 3,224.13.

U.S. shares were also helped by service-sector data, as the Institute for Supply Management said Tuesday said its survey of purchasing managers ? the executives who buy supplies for their companies ? showed more optimism than analysts had expected in February.

Benchmark oil for April delivery rose 20 cents to close at $91.02 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 70 cents to close at $90.82 a barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday, hours after the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, whose country sits on the world's second-largest oil reserves, after Saudi Arabia.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3062 from $1.3040 late Tuesday in New York. The dollar fell to 93.12 yen from 93.29 yen.

Exclusive: KKR close to buying Gardner Denver - sources

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Private equity firm KKR & Co LP is nearing a deal to buy industrial machinery maker Gardner Denver Inc and could announce the agreement in the next few days, two people familiar with the matter said on Monday.

The two parties have been negotiating a final deal price and other last-minute details over the past week, after KKR bid $75 per share, or nearly $3.7 billion, for Gardner Denver, on February 21, the people said.

Shares of Gardner Denver, which were down 1 percent on Monday before the news, rose 3.6 percent to $73.62 on the New York Stock Exchange, valuing the company at around $3.6 billion.

The final price could not be learned, but Gardner Denver's board sought a higher price from the buyout firm, the people familiar with the matter said.

Negotiations are continuing and could still fall apart, said the people, who asked not to be named because the matter is not public. Representatives for KKR declined to comment. Gardner Denver could not be immediately reached for comment.

Gardner Denver, which makes compressors, pumps and vacuum products for industrial uses, decided to put it up for sale late last year following months of pressure from activist investor ValueAct Capital LLC, which acquired a roughly 5 percent stake.

ValueAct has said that it supports KKR's reported offer of $75 per share, noting that the price represented a premium of 44 percent over the company's share price on July 26, when it wrote to the company's board urging it to explore a sale.

KKR has been in the pole position to buy Gardner Denver after other private equity bidders who initially took part in the auction abandoned the process ahead of the February 21 deadline for final bids, people familiar with the matter have said.

This followed the collapse of Gardner Denver's advanced negotiations in December with industry peer SPX Corp over a deal at $85 per share, people familiar with the matter told Reuters at the time. The proposed deal fell apart partly because of backlash from SPX shareholders who questioned the logic of such a merger.

SPX's reported $85 per share bid, which was seen as an aggressive price, also promoted prominent activist investor Relational Investors LLC to acquire a stake and agitate for change at SPX.

Bring Your Book to Life: How It's Done with Lisa Tener - Ginger Moran

Ginger: I know that you are offering a free call for people to find out more about writing their book and about writing itself and about your upcoming class. ?Can you tell me who would benefit most from listening to the call?

?Lisa: Birth Your Book in 2013: 5 Keys to Write Your Bestseller At Last is for people who are writing nonfiction, particularly self-help, how-to or memoir, and who are either at the very beginning of the book-writing process or who started and got stuck and want to move ahead with more ease?and write the right book.

Ginger: What is special about your approach?

Lisa: A few things: One is the way I help people discover the book inside them. As you know, my signature exercise is what I call my ?Meet Your Muse? visualization. People often find they write a much better book because of the work we do in this exercise and we?ll cover a shortened version of this on the call on March 19.

Ginger: Great. What else?

Lisa: The creative aspect is one crucial part of it. As someone who?s won awards in marketing, I bring to the table the understanding of how to write a marketable book?that doesn?t mean writing a book that?s inauthentic in any way?it?s about writing a book that will more deeply resonate for your market?the specific people who are going to buy your book because of what they realize it can do for them. And it also means the book is more likely to be effective for them?and have the kind of impact an author wants to have on people and their lives.

Ginger: How do you teach that?

Lisa:. I have a system that can help people write a book rather quickly?even novices. You can have a first draft in as little as 8-12 weeks. And we?ll cover some of my tips on that initial teleseminar on March 19. It?s not about writing a cookie cutter type book and we don?t sacrifice quality for speed. It?s just that the approach is really systematic and it works!

Ginger: I can say from first-hand knowledge?you help people write high quality, marketable books and the track record to prove it. You have clients who are first time authors getting six figure book deals.

Lisa: That?s true and I try to bring that same kind of quality and marketability to authors who self publish, too.

Ginger: What might someone expect to learn from the call on March 19?

Lisa: We?ll cover some of those things that are critical to getting started and staying motivated and in action: motivation to prioritize the book, clarity about how they?ll make the time?and some fabulous tips on how to stick to it?because that?s where people often trip up.

We?ll also cover some of the critical questions that will help you shape your book concept.

And I?ll help people on the call connect with their own deep wisdom about the amazing book inside them.

I?ll share keys to writing a high quality, unique, marketable book quickly?and with ease.

Ginger: And I hope you?ll share the secrets that help your clients snag five and six figure book deals with top publishers!

Lisa: Of course!

Ginger: Realistically speaking, what can people expect from joining your award winning Bring Your Book to Life Program?I know lots of people think it?s completely impossible to write a book in 8 weeks?.

Lisa: I should start by saying that this model works really well for self-help and how-to books. Memoirs tend to take longer and I let people take the class a second time in the fall if they are writing memoir.

Ginger: Having taught the class for you last summer, I?d agree wholeheartedly about the types of books that work well. Also, I would also point out that the program is best for books that do not require extensive research.

Lisa: Yes, that?s true. I recommend leaving holes in the book for research?that can be done later if you know your subject well, but ,as you said, if you need to do lots of research for the book, it?s not the best fit.

Ginger: So, could you take readers through the process:

Lisa: As soon as someone signs up we start working on their book concept and the structure of their book. They get some fabulous materials?a workbook and CDs?to walk them through exercises that bring clarity and ease to the process?and fun, too. And then I work privately with them to refine the book concept?vision, goals, audience, features, content and structure.

Once they complete that pre-work, they can start working on the actual book. So that may be well before the April 23 class actually begins?because they?ll have all their course materials and access to me?or they can wait until class starts.

Generally, you?d write about a chapter or a bit more per week?and can have a first draft by the end of class. And that includes feedback on up to 30 pages of their writing and a customized editing plan from me. It takes some commitment and they get profound support every step of the way. Some people work on a book proposal in the class instead of a book, but most write a first draft of their book.

Ginger:?I had some of the best fun I?ve ever had as a teacher working with the class last summer.

Lisa: You know, I?d like to mention to that if readers are interested in working directly with you they can also request to work with you as their guide for the one-on-one work, since you?ve taught the class and I have sent you many clients.

Ginger: Where can people sign up for the call?

Lisa: Right here:

Ginger: Thanks, Lisa.?I look forward to hearing the call on March 19!

Senators reach deal on gun trafficking legislation

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bipartisan group of senators has reached a deal on legislation that would for the first time create specific federal prohibitions on gun trafficking and the straw purchasing of firearms.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy says the bill would establish tough penalties for those who buy a firearm or ammunition with the intent of transferring it to someone else. The measure also would make it a crime to smuggle firearms out of the United States.

The bill was crafted by Leahy, two other Democrats and two Republicans and will be part of a package of four gun control measures that will be considered Thursday by the Judiciary Committee. The committee has taken the lead on the gun violence issue following the December school shootings in Newtown, Conn.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama learned in his first term that he couldn't change Washington from the inside, saying in the heat of his re-election race: "You can only change it from the outside." Months later, his former White House aides and campaign advisers are embracing Obama's words as a call to action.

Obama veterans are building a wide network of deep-pocketed groups and consulting firms independent of government, the Democratic Party and traditional liberal groups, a sweeping ? if not unprecedented ? effort outside the White House gates aimed at promoting the president's agenda and shaping his legacy.

From campaign strategists to online gurus and policy hands to press agents, Obama loyalists ? including many who discovered that a second term yields fewer administration job vacancies ? are slicing his agenda into smaller parts and launching highly targeted efforts on subjects including health care, job creation and electoral politics.

The lynchpin of the effort is Organizing for Action, a nonprofit run by former Obama advisers that has essentially transformed his re-election campaign into a grassroots machine to support his initiatives. In its early stages, the group is raising millions from big and small donors alike and whipping up support for issues like gun control and an immigration overhaul.

Known by its initials, OFA is chaired by Jim Messina, a former White House aide who ran Obama's 2012 campaign, and several former Obama aides sit on its board. David Plouffe, who until February served as Obama's senior adviser, is expected to join the board soon.

OFA's close ties to the West Wing and its control over the former campaign's resources has raised questions about where the nonprofit group ends and the White House starts. The group controls Obama's massive email list and also his campaign Twitter handle, which has more than 27 million followers and frequently tweets links to his government website.

As a tax-exempt entity, OFA by law can't intervene in elections and is subject to strict limits on lobbying. The group accepts unlimited donations from individuals and corporations but plans to release the names of its donors. The corporate funding is a shift: Obama's campaigns in 2008 and 2012 declined corporate, lobbyist or political action committee donations.

The arrangement has also opened the White House to criticism that contributors, in exchange for supporting the groups, could receive special access to Obama that the public is denied. White House press secretary Jay Carney fielded repeated questions last week over whether bundlers who raised $500,000 or more for OFA were promised quarterly meetings with the president ? a claim that OFA disputed.

"They have created literally a cottage industry solely devoted to access and making money off the access," said Sean Spicer, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee.

As advocacy groups, OFA and the smaller organizations can coordinate with the White House on messaging and tactics. Carney said the administration interacts with a variety of such groups, adding that administration officials may appear at OFA events but won't be raising money.

An OFA "founders' summit" for donors on March 13 at a Washington hotel will include addresses by Messina, Plouffe and others, according to an invitation obtained by The Associated Press. The next day will include briefings on immigration, gun control and climate change, with former Environmental Protection Agency head Lisa Jackson expected to attend.

But when OFA asks supporters to cut a check, it will be competing with a growing list of pro-Obama factions making appeals to a limited pool of Democratic donors.

Business Forward, a 3-year-old trade group that has facilitated meetings between businesses and Obama officials, is ramping up operation as a liberal counterweight to the conservative-leaning U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Business Forward is funded by corporate money that was banished from Obama's campaign coffers in 2008 and 2012.

More than 50 corporate members pay $25,000 or $50,000 a year to be involved in briefings between Obama administration officials and business leaders, small businesses and entrepreneurs. Its members include AT&T and Microsoft, which donated to Obama's inaugural committee, and Citi, Comcast and Facebook, whose executives served on Obama's jobs council.

"The goal is to bring new people into the process and help them tell Washington how to create jobs and accelerate our economic recovery," said Jim Doyle, Business Forward's president.

On health care, former White House official Anne Filipic recently took control of a nonprofit called Enroll America, which plans a massive push to get people to sign up for insurance under Obama's health care law, a key part of his legacy. The group is preparing for the opening of new insurance exchanges in October with on-the-ground organizing, online efforts and paid advertising.

Another team of Obama campaign aides, including field director Jeremy Bird and battleground state director Mitch Stewart, have formed a consulting firm called 270 Strategies that aims to bring grassroots organizing to political and industry clients. One early project, dubbed Battleground Texas, has set a long-term goal to make GOP-heavy Texas competitive for Democrats.

Although there's no one group formally coordinating the efforts, outside organizations allied with Obama hold regular check-in meetings and conference calls. Representatives compare notes about strategy, priorities and budgets.

"Many of us have spent at this point six years or longer together," said Teddy Goff, Obama's 2012 digital director, who is not affiliated with the fledgling bodies. "I have no doubt that people are talking to their old friends and making sure they're efficient as possible."

And while the various groups supporting Obama's agenda operate independently, the overlap in tactics, messaging and staff is tough to miss. For example, Blue State Digital, a firm founded by the campaign's digital strategist, Joe Rospars, is providing the same technology platform the campaign used to both OFA and Battleground Texas.

The blurring of the lines between outside groups, the campaign and the White House has rubbed some the wrong way. Critics say it's a sign that Obama has reversed course since rebuking the role of money in politics during his first campaign and at the start of his presidency.

"Organizing for Action is unlike any entity we have ever seen before tied to a president," said Fred Wertheimer, a campaign finance reform advocate with Democracy 21, a Washington nonprofit. "This group is so tied to Obama himself, that it creates opportunities for corporations and individuals to buy corrupting influence with the administration ? and at a minimum, to create the appearance of such influence."
