Report: Student makes out with teacher, wins bet

By Becky Bratu, msnbc.com

A New York high school senior allegedly won a bet with four friends to see who could hook up first with their 26-year-old global studies teacher, the New York Post reported.

A video recorded Friday by a Manhattan Theatre Lab High School pupil shows fellow student Eric Arty, 18, kissing?a woman?on a park bench in lower Manhattan.

Arty denied to the Post that?the woman he is seen with at Bleecker Playground in Greenwich Village is teacher Julie Warning.

?Yeah, that?s me. I?m kissing a girl,? Arty told the newspaper when confronted with the photo. ?That?s not my teacher that I?m kissing in the picture. It?s just a girl I know.?

Arty refused to say who the woman was.

The teacher also denied the involvement, telling the Post: ?He is my student, but I?ve never had a relationship with him or any of my students. That is inappropriate. I think that this is a misunderstanding.?

A spokesperson for the city's school district confirmed to msnbc.com the incident was being looked at.

Laurel Wright-Hinckson, public information officer for the Special Commissioner of Investigation for the New York City School District, told msnbc.com an investigation had just been started, and would take at least a couple of months to complete.

The student who filmed the two kissing said Warning is "the most appealing teacher in the school.?

?She always wore nice skirts, and she had appealing tattoos all over her body,? he told the Post.

Arty and four of his friends each contributed $100 to a pool, the newspaper said.?The first to win Warning's affection would win the cash.

Some students told the Post that Warning tried to resist the teenagers? flirtations at first.

?She would try to avoid it because she was [Arty's] teacher," a student told the paper. "She was a nice teacher and didn?t want to report him, and she would throw him and his friends out of class for trying to flirt with her,? the student said.

According to the Post, Warning was?reassigned on Tuesday?to an administrative position at the school, which is north of Manhattan's Lincoln Center.

A Department of Education spokesperson told msnbc.com Warning didn't report to her new desk job Wednesday.

It wasn't clear whether Warning reported for her reassignment on Thursday.

Job at stake, but no possible charges
Warning does not have tenure at the school and could lose her job, but she wouldn't face criminal charges because Arty isn't a minor.

The teacher's father, Pete Warning, told the Post this?didn't seem like something she would do.

?All of her students, like 85 percent, are gonna pass their Regents for the first time," Peter Warning said, speaking of the standardized tests students take in New York State.?"They all love her. My heart?s broken.?

Earlier this week, Mayor Michael Bloomberg,?the school chancellor?and State Senator Stephen Saland announced new legislation to better protect New York students from inappropriate sexual contact with teachers.

Under current law, outside hearing officers decide on these cases and impose penalties ? including whether or not a teacher is fired. The new legislation would make it easier to remove a teacher who is found to have engaged in sexual activity with students.

?If a school employee is found to have engaged in sexual behavior or made sexual comments towards students, the chancellor should have the final say on what action to take and the legislation we are proposing would provide that authority,? Bloomberg said Tuesday?in a press release.

?Every child deserves a safe learning environment and every parent has the right to know that his or her child is safe while at school,? he said.?

Product Review Enterbay's Scarface WAR Version - OSW: One Sixth ...

Enterbay continues to impress collectors and fans of both action figures and movies with their line of Real Masterpiece figures based on fan-favorite films. Their latest entry in the series is none other than Scarface War Version. Beautifully capturing one of the unique looks of Tony Montana from the classic, critically acclaimed film Scarface, this 12" figure features an impressive package, well-designed suit, and a variety of accessories.

PACKAGING

Like other Real Masterpiece figures, Tony Montana comes in a solidly constructed, heavy duty rectangular white box featuring the film's movie poster on the front and the character's logo on side. The interior of the box features a cutout foam core which protects the figure as well as a molded plastic tray which houses the weapons and accessories. Both the foam and plastic tray allow for collector-friendly packaging, which is a bonus for collectors who want to display and later store the figure.

SCULPT & CLOTHING

Thanks to the impressive work by Enterbay's artists, the figure features a near perfect sculpt of actor Al Pacino as gangster Tony Montana. The minute details are all present, from the snarl on Tony's face to the scar under Tony's left eye and left eyebrow. Tony's snarl, sculpted perfectly to portray his look of pure disgust and anger, helps bring the character to life as does the figure's sculpted hair, which, together, capture a specific look from the film which no doubt collectors will appreciate. Likewise, the hands likewise feature a good deal of sculpting, including multiple rings on the fingers and veins.

Something that's impressive on the Scarface War Version figure is the clothing, which again captures a specific look from a certain scene in the film. The shoes and belt are faux leather while the pinstripe suit - to include the white undershirt with butterfly collar, pinstripe vest, and jacket and slacks - all fit the Real Masterpiece Enterbay 12" body perfectly. (That said, the articulation does suffer due to the tight fitting jacket, shirt, and pants - more on that below).

PAINT APPLICATION

The figure's most prominent painted features are on the face and head. Enterbay uses what's referred to as a "multi-layer" paint technique, which puts layers of paint down to give them a more natural look. This works well with Tony Montana as it provides an incredibly realistic looking figure. Everything from the character's sunspots to the realistic 5 o'clock shadow are present thanks to this technique. The paint application on the hands is less impressive, but still very good. Shading on both the face, neck, hair, and hands provides some additional depth, which as previously mentioned helps add a realistic look.

ARTICULATION

The figure base is the Enterbay Real Masterpiece 12" Body, which - like the Hot Toys Truetype - features a generous amount of articulation providing for plenty of realistic posing and positioning. The figure body features pin joint feet, ball and twist ankles, double-jointed knees and elbows, ball-joint hips, twist and pivot waist and chest, ball-joint shoulders, pivoting shoulder/chest, ball and pin wrists, and a ball-in-socket head. With a total of over 25 points of articulation, the body provides for plenty of optional movement. However, as previously mentioned, many of these articulation points are restricted by the clothing, which hinders the full range of movement. This isn't really an issue as it's to be expected, but it's worth mentioning.

WEAPONS & ACCESSORIES

Scarface War Version wouldn't be complete without his AR-15 with attached M203 Grenade Launcher. The figure includes two grenades as well to have Tony load as well as two removable magazines for the rifle. Other accessories include four sets of hands are also included, providing a variety of hand/accessory display options. These hands include weapon holding, fists, relaxed, and others which specifically fit other accessories, like the cigar. The figure includes a number of jewelry pieces, including a watch, a pair of sunglasses, a gold necklace and a silver bracelet. Besides the rifle, the most prominent accessory is a briefcase, which houses three bags of cocaine; an appropriate accessory for Tony Montana.

COST & OVERALL IMPRESSION

If you're a die-hard fan of Scarface - and there are a lot of die-hard Scarface fans and collectors out there due to the character's popularity among the hip hop crowd - this is an excellent addition to your collection. With a retail price of around $230.00, this isn't a cheap figure and it'll primarily appeal to those collectors looking to add additional Scarface memorabilia to their collection or add an impressive 1/6th scale figure to their display.

While the Enterbay Scarface War Version figure does have a few minor faults, the only significant drawback is the price, which may turn off casual fans or collectors looking to pick up what is a very impressive and all-around amazing addition to a display or collection.

Violent holiday weekend in Chicago: 40 shot, 10 killed

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

More than 40 people were shot in Chicago over the holiday weekend, and at least 10 of them were killed, NBCChicago.com reported.

The latest shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. in Albany Park, a Chicago neighborhood, where police said a man was shot in the face. It followed dozens of shootings across the city since Friday.

"It's been a real rough weekend, a lot of gun violence," community activist Pastor Corey Brooks told ABC News.

Most of the victims were in stable or good condition, but as of Monday morning several remained in serious or critical condition, including the Albany Park victim.

"Very clearly, we have a gang problem in the city of Chicago," Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said at a press conference Tuesday, according to Chicago Web publication Gapers Block.

McCarthy said the strategy will include monitoring social media, including Twitter and Facebook, which he said are used as means of communication by gangs.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel mentioned the city's crackdown on liquor stores as another successful measure in curbing gang violence. Liquor stores, he said, are like a "cancer on the community."

Four liquor stores have already been shut down, Gapers Block said, and dozens may have their licenses revoked.

According to the Chicago Tribune, homicides have increased 49 percent so far this year, with 200 people killed in 2012 compared with 134 during the same period in 2011. Shootings are also up nearly 14 percent over last year, the paper reported.

Some experts believe warmer weather could be causing violent crime to spike.

"For us, when the weather's warm, the first thing we think, we're going to get some gunshots in here because we know people are out in the street," Dr. Larry Mitchell of Chicago's Roseland Community Hospital told NPR.??

The 66-degree average temperature in May is the warmest of any Chicago May over the past 35 years, the Chicago Weather Center reported. And?Monday's 95-degree high is Chicago's warmest Memorial Day temperature since they started keeping records 142 years ago, according to the weather center.

But police superintendent Gary McCarthy is not ready to blame the weather for the city's spike in the murder rate.

"I'm not willing to chalk it up to the weather, the tides, the moons, voodoo, you name it," he told NPR. Instead, he blames Chicago's gang culture.

The weekend's most violent period was an hour-and-a-half stretch early Sunday morning, when 13 people were shot.?The youngest victim is a 7-year-old girl shot Saturday afternoon in the arm as she was playing outside her home. She is expected to recover.

At least four teenagers were also killed in separate shootings this weekend.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and police officials are expected to address the public Tuesday on new strategies aimed at reducing crime, ABC News reported. According to the mayor's office, they will announce "coordinated gang-reduction and neighborhood safety strategies."

NBCChicago.com contributed to this report.

NSP Strategist: VoIP, Spectrum, Net Neutrality and More

This title, VoIP Provider Files Net Neutrality Complaint With FCC, is not accurate - and the case is a mess. Read it and see what you think.

"Cloud computing is forcing all technology companies to adapt their business in some way."

Small business is the backbone of the economy. See nice INFOGRAPHIC here about small businesses from Paychex.

The Atlantic Wire writes about the IDL: "The Internet has a new line of defense against laws like SOPA, ACTA and PIPA that threaten the web's free-flow of information: The Internet Defense League .. The roster of websites that have already signed up reads like the Internet's own version of the Justice League. According to AllThingsD, "WordPress, Imgur, Reddit, Cheezburger Network, Public Knowledge, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Craigslist founder Craig Newmark" have all agreed to participate."

Spectrum

A win for Sprint: FCC approves 3G and 4G on iDEN spectrum

Presidential Panel Urges better Use of Spectrum from the NYT. "The new plan, which calls on the government to electronically rent or lease spectrum for periods of time as short as seconds using newly available computerized radio technologies, was presented publicly Friday to a meeting of the President?s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, or PCAST. ... Twice this month in speeches before cellular and cable companies Julius Genachowski, the FCC chairman, has called on industry to embrace spectrum-sharing technologies to make room for the wireless data explosion." The spectrum is fragmented and inefficient the way it stands now, from rules set up 100 years ago. The problem rests with "radio spectrum is licensed to both commercial users and government agencies who have no incentive to use the spectrum they control efficiently." That only changes with Congress, the FCC and a mess bigger than the digital TV transformation.

For the paranoid: "FBI quietly forms secretive Net-surveillance unit - CNET has learned that the FBI has formed a Domestic Communications Assistance Center, which is tasked with developing new electronic surveillance technologies, including intercepting Internet, wireless, and VoIP communications." Choosing Someone To Do Acupuncture Aliso Viejo

Many people like to seek out alternative health treatments because there are so many of them that offer an exceptionally high level of safety, and also give patients the chance to take a greater level of control over the way that they care for their body. There are things that it is important to know, however, before embarking on any kind of new treatment program, such as before looking for someone to do acupuncture Aliso Viejo.

It is absolutely imperative that anyone with an interest in getting acupuncture Aliso Viejo focus on making sure that they go to someone who is licensed by their state if that is a possibility. The tiny needles involved in this procedure do not generally pose a major threat, but it is still important to take every possible precaution when it comes to something that is going to be breaking through the skin barrier that protects the internals of a person?s body. Licensed practitioners have to follow rules that are designed to ensure that they do everything possible to protect their clients, such as discarding all of the needles that they used immediately after a session in order to ensure that nothing is ever used on more than one individual.

It is also very important to have realistic expectations of what getting acupuncture Aliso Viejo is going to mean. It is not a good idea, for example, to decide to stop radiation and chemotherapy treatments for cancer in order to try these treatments. On the other hand, many people who are currently in conventional cancer treatment programs find that they feel better and handle the harsh side effects of their medication more easily with the help of acupuncture treatments.

There is no harm in getting acupuncture Aliso Viejo from someone who is licensed and who follows the protocols that are designed to protect clients. However, patients need to be realistic in their expectations, and must make sure in advance that they are hiring someone who is going to be looking out for their best interests. It is never a bad idea to ask questions before proceeding with a session if there is any confusion whatsoever.

3D blood vessels could aid artificial organs

Growing artificial organsMovie Camera might help solve the transplantation shortage, but one major hurdle still exists: it is difficult to get blood vessels to grow all the way through a large organ. A gel that allows blood vessels to grow in precise shapes and respond to human cells in a manner similar to natural vessels might help jumpstart that process.

Ying Zheng at the University of Washington in Seattle and colleagues injected human endothelial cells ? which line blood vessels ? into tiny channels within a collagen gel.

The endothelial cells spread throughout the channels, which were only micrometres in width, and formed hollow, three-dimensional tubes, or microvessels. When the researchers pumped blood into the system, it moved through the microvessels without sticking. It could even flow smoothly around 90 degree bends.

The researchers then added a series of proteins involved in inflammation. They found that the proteins caused the blood to clot inside the microvessels, just as it would in the body. Because the system reacted to these stimuli in the same way as a natural vascular system would, Zheng says, it might one day be useful for screening drugs.

When the group injected human brain and muscle cells into the gel, along with proteins that stimulate blood vessel growth, the microvessels showed that they could branch and integrate with the two types of tissue.

Because the channels can be directed into any shape, bioengineer Linda Griffith of Massachusetts Institute of Technology is hopeful that the system can model complex vascular systems such as the blood-brain barrier, which is difficult to study in living animals. Additionally, she adds, researchers could study how cancers metastasise by putting other cell types, such as bone or liver cells, into the channels along with cancerous cells.

Zheng says that the next step is to use the system as a starting point for an artificial organ. Drawing the channels in the right shape will allow the organ to have an adequate blood supply throughout.

Obama Prays for Fallen Troops in Memorial Day Proclamation

  • (Photo: Reuters/Jason Reed)

President Barack Obama bows his head in prayer in this May 2, 2011, file photo.

May 26, 2012|1:29 pm

"Our nation endures and thrives because of the devotion of our men and women in uniform, who, from generation to generation, carry a burden heavier than any we may ever know," Obama said in his prayer for peace. "On Memorial Day, we honor those who have borne conflict's greatest cost, mourn where the wounds of war are fresh, and pray for a just, lasting peace."

The president said the American fabric was "stitched with stories of sons and daughters who gave their lives in service to the country they loved."

"They were patriots who overthrew an empire and sparked revolution," he said. "They were courageous men and women who strained to hold a young Union together. They were ordinary citizens who rolled back the creeping tide of tyranny, who stood post through a long twilight struggle, who saw terror and extremism threaten our world's security and said, 'I'll go.'"

Behind the sustenance of the country and the safety of its heritage as a free people in a free society are all those who have borne the battle, Obama added. He asked God to "bless the souls of the venerable warriors we have lost." May God "watch over the men and women who serve us now. Today, tomorrow, and in perpetuity, let us give thanks to them by remaining true to the values and virtues for which they fight."

The president proclaimed Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, as a day of prayer for permanent peace, and designated the hour beginning in each locality at 11:00 a.m. as a time to unite in prayer. "I also ask all Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance beginning at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day."

Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers. People visit cemeteries and memorials and place American flags on graves.

Obama requested that the governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the appropriate officials of all units of government, have the flag be flown at half-staff until noon on Monday on all buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the country and in all areas under its jurisdiction and control. "I also request the people of the United States to display the flag at half-staff from their homes for the customary forenoon period."

A Happy Home

Sally had always dreaded the thought of having to relocate again. The last few years she had moved several times because of her work. It was beginning to become a burden each time she had to pack her life up and start over. The only saving grace in her move was she was using moving pods. That made her move much easier.

Moving was always difficult, but trying to find a new home was just as hard. Generally what she would do at night would be surfing the Internet looking at all of the different options she had as far as new places to live. Sometimes she thought getting a house would be nice, but then she would have to maintain a yard. Other times she thought living and an apartment building would be cool, but she would have so many people around her all the time. These are always things she had to take into consideration.

Right before her move she found a place that seemed perfect. Not only was it cozy but the landlord agreed to see her immediately. Once she arrived to her destination she really liked what she saw. The place seemed perfect for her, and for once she thought she would stay for a while. The landlord was friendly and told her he could have the place available immediately so she would not have to wait.

The night before was always difficult for Sally. Right before she left one house and got ready to move into another she would often reflect about all of the decisions she had made over the years. She was now in her 30s and realized that she had given up everything for her career. She never had a family, and had always made her job number one. That sometimes bothered her, but she always kept pushing forward with her job.

Moving day rapidly approached. The good news is that she was ready to go and so was the moving company. Everything went well, so she was very happy about that.

Driving to her new place felt different this time. She felt like she was going to stay longer than normal. She was hoping this new place would feel like a home to her.

Her landlord could sense that she was very eager to move in. He had her sign a few documents and gave her the keys and was on his way. Sally appreciated that, and sat on her living room floor looking at her new place.

She heard a large truck pull up and realized all of her moving pods were here. A great sense of relief came over her because she knew it was up to her to get her new place made into a home.

Your China-Economy Reading List for the Evening

In my first few hours back in Shanghai, I am newly amazed by the scale and pace of the building, of the ambitions, of the problems, and of the range of Chinese dreams realistic and fanciful. More on that after some sleep. For now:

1) From John Berthelsen of Asia Sentinel, this "Chart of the Day," showing the role of construction outlays in China's overall investment picture. The blue line is construction investment; the red line is total fixed asset investment; and the scale appears to be rate of increase year-on-year.

As Berthelsen says (in a note to me) about the pattern shown here, "You can see how construction spiked earlier this year as the government seeks to construct its way out of the current slump. Since they announced a flock of accelerated construction projects [this week], it should spike back again." I did an Atlantic article on the previous spike, in 2009, while still in Beijing.

One of the big themes in my new book is that the Chinese development model of the past 30 years has been very heavily reliant on the "when in doubt, build something" strategy. In the short term, this approach certainly keeps people employed -- and enriches others through real-estate transactions. In the medium term, it creates infrastructure that can help the country grow (subways, ports, the 100+ airports under construction). And in the long term, even some of the apparent white elephants and "ghost cities" may eventually be grown-into as Chinese demand goes up and up.

But too great a reliance on construction and real-estate boosterism creates various follow-on distortions, as I'll spell out another time. For now, thanks to Berthelsen for the chart.

2) In case you haven't seen it, it is worth reading this article from Arthur Kroeber, at Foreign Policy, on the China trends that are really serious and those that will probably take care of themselves. Sample:

No question, China has many problems. Years of one-sided investment-driven growth have created obvious excesses and overcapacity.... Is China's legendary economy in serious trouble?

Not just yet. The odds are that China will navigate these shoals and continue to grow at a fairly rapid pace of around 7 percent a year for the remainder of the decade, overtaking the United States to become the world's biggest economy around 2020.... Considerably less certain, however, is whether China's secretive and corrupt Communist Party can make this growth equitable, inclusive, and fair. Rather than economic collapse, it's far more likely that a decade from now China will have a strong economy but a deeply flawed and unstable society.

This is a complex point (as Kroeber, who has been on-scene in China for a very long time, is well aware). For what it's worth, I think the environmental, social, and political tensions could become serious even sooner than Kroeber suggests -- that's part of the concluding argument in my book. And before anyone writes in to point it out, I am fully aware that modern America's version of the same problem -- "overall economy doing OK, most people not doing OK" -- is a first-order challenge to our national well-being. The main point is that it is worth reading Kroeber's essay.

3) Worried that the imbalances in US-Chinese trade and investment flows leave the United States helplessly at China's whim and mercy? You might want to consider how the picture looks from the perspective of a state-controlled nationalist paper in China, Global Times. Here is a translation of one of its editorials this week:

"Sino-U.S trade not equal and mutually beneficial (pg 15)

"No matter from what point of view, China is more dependent on the U.S. than vice versa.? As long as there is an asymmetric dependence, there can be no equality or mutual benefit.?

"Over the years, the United States has used dollars to exchange for China's real resources, goods and services.? However, with this greenback or electronic symbols, China is not allowed to purchase real U.S. assets but rather U.S. dollar denominated securities and treasury bonds to support the U.S. economy.? With the dollar's depreciation and inflation, China's foreign exchange reserves continue to shrink.? Is this equal and mutually beneficial??

"The United States at every turn uses its domestic law to impose anti-dumping and countervailing duties on products made-in-China, implementing "special protection."? Is this equal and mutually beneficial?? Ford, Wal-Mart, Goldman Sachs and other U.S. companies can drive straight into Chinese market, while CNOOC, Huawei were long shut out by the U.S.? Is this equal and mutually beneficial?"

One other immediate reaction on this trip: the rediscovered annoyance of dealing with a firewalled Internet, even in the most modern hotel I have ever stayed in. (Yes, I realize that this is a country-level rather than hotel-level blocking scheme; I just am referring to the incongruous mix of hyper-advanced luxury technology and hyper-backward internet access.) Something has happened so that my old VPN provider now appears to be blocked. A project for later in the day.

The unusual confessor who broke the Etan Patz cold case

Killing Etan Patz in 1979 may have been the only time alleged killer Pedro Hernandez hurt someone. While he avoided detection for 33 years, the secret took enough of a toll that Hernandez broke down in tears as he confessed, appearing remorseful and ?relieved.?

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / May 26, 2012

Pedro Hernandez is arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court via video link seen here in this courtroom sketch in New York Friday. Hernandez has confessed to killing Etan Patz.

After New York police dug into a SoHo basement in April searching for the remains of Etan Patz, a 6-year-old New Yorker who disappeared on May 25, 1979, Pedro Hernandez did something very unusual, family members told the press: He called his sister in New York, to talk about the case.

Working off a tip from an unnamed source, New York police on Friday arrested and arraigned Mr. Hernandez. It was the 33rd anniversary of the day when the tow-headed Etan, lugging a backpack painted with cartoon elephants, disappeared as he walked alone to school for the first time. The subsequent search for Etan sparked national ?stranger-danger? fears and turned May 25 into the federally-recognized National Missing Children?s Day.

The man who had allegedly kept a sinister secret for 33 years broke down during a 3 ? hour interrogation on Wednesday. He appeared both remorseful and ?relieved,? New York detectives said.

According to police, Hernandez, then an 18-year-old stockboy at a SoHo bodega, said he lured Etan into the basement with a soda, then strangled him and put the body into a plastic bag, which was then presumably taken to a city landfill. Hernandez told police that he realized Etan was ?the one? after feeling an ?urge to kill.?

While little is known about Hernandez, the story given so far by police is peculiar, experts say, for several reasons, including the apparent lack of sexual assault motive and the fact that Hernandez, described by some as shy and standoffish, appears to have retreated from the act into a quiet middle-class existence in New Jersey, perhaps never hurting anyone again.

But whether as a precursor of the crime or a result, Hernandez, a disabled construction worker, reportedly has wrestled with psychological problems for years. On Friday, as Hernandez remained on suicide watch at Bellevue Hospital, his attorney, Harvey Fishbein, said Hernandez had a ?long psychiatric history,? including hallucinations, which a New York judge took into consideration, ordering a psychiatric evaluation to see whether he?s fit to stand trial.

Hernandez?s call to his sister and his ?relief? at unburdening his story hints at a criminal case that strays beyond the standard profile of a killer. For one thing, Hernandez had talked about doing ?a bad thing? as far back as 1981, though no one ever took him seriously enough to report that.

Hormone Linked to Social Skills in Autism | dailyRx

Oxytocin is a hormone that is known to be involved in the feelings of connectedness with others. New research links levels of oxytocin with social functioning in autism.

A recent study found that people with autism may have lower levels of oxytocin than people without, and this may contribute to poor social function.

The preliminary findings of the study support more research into the use of oxytocin as a supplement to improve social feelings.

Talk to your psychiatrist about improving social skills

A study at Emory University by Elisar Andari, PhD, looked at the levels of oxytocin in 13 patients with autism and 30 healthy participants and found that blood levels of oxytocin were lower in children with autism.

They also asked the people with autism to participate in a social activity after taking a nasal dose of oxytocin, designed to raise blood levels of the hormone, or a saline solution as a comparison.

After the social activity, patients reported their feelings of trust and connectedness with the other people in the activity. The patients who took oxytocin reported more feelings of trust for the other people in the activity.

Feelings of trust towards others are known to increase positive feelings about social interactions and feelings of connectedness with others.

The study also asked people without autism to take a personality test and found that levels of oxytocin were related to their social personality.?

People that were more introverted, less social, had lower levels than people who were very social.

The researchers concluded that levels of oxytocin are directly related to how people socialize and their feelings about social connectedness. Low levels of oxytocin for people with autism may contribute to their social issues, and supplementing oxytocin may be a way to increase social feelings in people with autism.

This study was small, however, so it is unclear how these findings will repeat in larger populations. More research is needed on the risks and benefits of oxytocin as a treatment.

This study was presented on May 17 at the International Meeting on Autism Research in Toronto Canada. No conflicts of interest were disclosed.

The study has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal, which means other scientists may not have had a chance to review the methods and data to ensure it passes their quality standards.

Autism

Recent statistics suggest that 1 out of every 110 children, 1.5 million people, born every year in the United States will be diagnosed with some form of an autism spectrum disorder. Boys are three times as likely to be affected as girls. Autism is a complex developmental disorder that causes impaired social interaction and communication, as well as causing restricted and sometimes repetitive behavior.

Symptoms are suspected when a child around 18 months has delayed speech development, and has difficulty playing with other children. Genetic causes are suspected to be a large factor, as well as some environmental causes, but a definitive cause is not known.

?

Treatment consists of several different types of therapy geared towards each patient's needs, such as physical therapy, speech therapy, and behavioral analysis and modification. Some medications may be appropriate such as anti-anxiety medications (Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax), medications for hyperactivity ((ex. Concerta, Ritalin, Strattera), and risperidone (Risperdal) for irritability and aggression.

Bridal Headdress For A French Pleat

Bridal Headdress for A French Pleat

Having long hair can at times make it difficult to feel like you have a 'hair style' and a certain amount of apprehension may be felt for your hair style on your wedding day! A good idea is to try on as many different headdresses as you like and then work from there with your hair style as with long hair, you can pretty much have any hair style you desire. It is advisable to sit down with your hair stylist and either show her your headdress or show some pictures of the ones you like and discuss which style most identifies with the look you are aiming for.

The classical French Pleat or Plait has been a favoured hair style for generations and has been updated over the years making this style perfect for bridal hair pins or a bridal hair comb. If you get a good quality bridal hair pin or comb, you will find small eyelet wire holes wired into the design. These are no mistakes! They are positioned by the designer and maker for your hair stylist to add in additional grips to add security to your bridal headdress. Remember, your headdress has got to see you right through the day and into the night!

The beauty with hair pins is being a lot more light weight, they remain a lot more firmly in your hair style and are easier to position and re-position without disrupting your overall hair style. If on the other hand your bridal hair comb has a more heavier detail like a Marcasite vintage brooch, you will need the extra eyelet holes to provide further secure holding points within your hair style.

With the use of Swarovski crystals, fresh water pearls, pure silk flowers and hand dyed lace, you can end up with an extremely cost effective yet striking headdress. Why not ask your designer to come up with some designs that incorporate a vintage piece of jewellery, sometimes Marcasite brooches or other silver accent pieces can transform a whole look on to another level. If you've managed to save some money on your dress, why not look into a bespoke headdress, you may be surprised at how much you can get for your money!

It is well worth shopping around to find a company that can create a bespoke headdress for you and your bridesmaids alike and especially find one that can complement your dress, hair colours, bridal colour and theme and even your bridal bouquet. Most importantly you need a company who will work with your budget!

Canon Vixia HF R300

With video-capable phones and cameras, consumer camcorders?are in a tough spot when it comes to balancing price and usefulness. The Canon Vixia HF M50?($649.99, 3 stars) captures great video, but at that price, you might as well get a high-end digital camera that also takes great still images. The Canon Vixia HF R300 ($349.99 direct) falls in the lower range of the company's consumer camcorder line, but offers a far more compelling combination of performance and value. It lacks some of the low-light prowess found in the M50, but takes the advantage with a wider angle lens and 32x optical zoom. The smaller sensor still produces some great looking high-definition video, making the R300 a solid choice for the weekend videographer looking for a no-frills, easy-to-use standalone camcorder.

Design and Features
The R300 looks a lot like the higher-end M50, measuring 2.2 by 2.1 by 4.5 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 8.8 ounces. It feels a bit flimsier than the M50 (2.5 by 2.7 by 4.8 inches / 10.9 ounces), but is still comfortable to hold and shoot for long periods. The control layout is nearly identical on the R300 and M50, with a Record button on the right side, where your thumb naturally sits, and a zoom rocker on top, within reach of your index finger. In the LCD recess are Video Snap, Home, and Playback buttons, as well as a 3.5mm headphone and microphone jack, mini HDMI out, and mini USB out. There is no built-in memory, only a single slot for an SD, SDHC, or SDXC card. The lens cover is engaged and disengaged by a small switch to its right, which is less convenient than the automatic cover on the M50.?

All controls are accessed with the 3-inch touch-screen LCD. It definitely gives the R300 a clean and minimalist look, but I found navigating the touch menus to be a bit cumbersome. Focus, white balance, and exposure are all buried in touch menus, and getting precise control is too difficult. With this type of camcorder, however, I expect most users will stick to the fully automatic mode, which I found to be fast and accurate in most situations. The 230k-dot LCD is the same as the one found on the M50, and is still a bit too grainy and dim for bright outdoor light.

The R300 uses a smaller 1/4.85-inch HD CMOS sensor, but also packs a far more versatile lens. The 32x zoom lens features a 38.5-1232mm focal length (35mm equivalent) with an f/1.8-4.5 aperture, which is wider and longer than the M50's 10x zoom (43.4-436mm) with its f/1.8-3.0 aperture. Canon advertises a 51x zoom factor, using what it calls the Advanced Zoom feature, but really this is just a combination of optical and digital zoom.?

Performance and Conclusions
Though it lacks the "Pro" designation found on the M50, the R300 is a capable shooter, capturing crisp and clear high-definition video. You can choose from three shooting modes?Auto, Manual, and Cinema?with the latter simulating the look and frame rate of most film projects. Video format and quality can also be adjusted, with the highest setting, MXP, recording 1080i60 video in AVCHD format. Much like the M50, the R300 is limited to interlaced video as opposed to progressive, capturing 60 interlaced fields per second and encoding the video at 30 frames per second.

The resulting video is very similar to the M50, which is to say good, with sharp detail and fine textures. White balance is a bit less accurate with the R300, with colors skewing towards cooler hues. The smaller sensor means smaller pixels, which results in reduced low-light performance. The difference is most evident in the amount of image noise apparent in low-lighting situations. The M50 excelled, while the R300 showed noticeable grain in low-light. It didn't ruin the video by any means, but it is evident when playing back on large screen HDTVs.

Image stabilization is solid, helping steady shots at both the wide end and telephoto max. The 32x zoom is impressive, and could really come in handy if filming, say, a school play from the back row of a large auditorium. Obviously even powered image stabilization can only do so much, and when fully zoomed, video had the same dreamy wobble found on the M50, though it was a bit more noticeable on the R300. Autofocus was quick and accurate, and I actually encountered fewer instances where the focus would shift to the background inadvertently than on the M50. Audio quality was on par with the M50, with similar issues with picking up wind and other ambient room noises. And as with the M50, the R300 has a 3.5mm mic input for better audio capture with an external microphone.?

When compared with video captured by a point-and-shoot camera, like our Editors' Choice Canon PowerShot S100?($429.99, 4.5 stars), the R300's video lacked some of the saturation and vibrancy, but was able to achieve similar levels of detail and sharpness. The R300 does have an advantage in moving shots, like a slow pan, where the S100 turned in slightly choppy video. Still images, which are captured at 2-megapixel resolution, however, don't loook great on the R300, with too much image noise and loss of finer details.

The Canon Vixia HF R300 strikes a solid balance between performance, features, and price. At $349.99 it's less expensive than most digital cameras that shoot comparable video. It lacks the built-in memory, Wi-Fi, and low light performance of the M50, but also costs considerably less. A solid camera like the PowerShot S100 is more versatile, taking far better stills and capturing relatively sharp 1080p video. However, if you're sold on the traditional camcorder form-factor, the R300 is a solid, easy to use, and relatively affordable option for more casual shooters.

It is also important that new techniques and approaches begin being introduced to schools since recent research shows that half of all children are visual learners thus meaning they require to be provided with visual examples to learn effectively where as the other half are auditory learners thus meaning they earn better while listening to procedures. Most school teach using the auditory method and if the schools adopt both technique it is sure that UP Board Result 2012 and future examination will have major improvement.

Many private schools are today adopting the technology to teach students and it has seen many weak students drastically improve the learning capabilities. Beyond Strategy: It's About Value ? The Learning Pond

We might refer to the last 20 or 30 years in independent school management as the Era of Strategic Planning.? Schools recognized during this time that they were businesses, not mom-and-pop start-ups or old boy clubs.? Businesses need to plan for the future, not just believe in it.? We learned to do five-year look-aheads according to best practices.? For many schools, particularly those that were founded or have grown substantially since the 1960?s or 1970?s, we crossed the Rubicon between putting out fires day-to-day and acting like a business with plans for a real future.

I am a huge fan of strategic planning.? My book, The Falconer, teaches strategic thinking and interprets The Art of War in perhaps its simplest and most personal form. But as Kevin Hendry from the University of Queensland writes in his Leading Strategic Conversations, strategic planning is evolving in substantive ways, and they are highly relevant to school leadership.

Both Hendry, and Jim Collins, who he cites, argue that leadership is now less about the vision of a charismatic or revered individual raised up for others to implement, and more about creating an ongoing dynamism in the organization for continuous self-evaluation and adaptation.

In the current fast-paced, fluid period of evolution, caused by the combination of market stresses and disruptive innovations that so many of us recognize, strategy has to be linked not only with long-range planning for financial and organizational stability, but in creating value.? This is not a new business concept but it is one that many school leaders have yet to embrace.

Strategic plans have focused on how the organization can operate efficiently and reliably: how to ensure a match between sources of revenue and the expenses of operation.? The link to value proposition requires that we understand what we offer from the direct viewpoint of the customer.? This viewpoint has not been the core focus of our strategic planning processes, and that will need to change. We can create new value, find value that we have always had but have underexploited, or expand on our current greatest values.? But we are not going to get there if we don?t shift our approach.

Strategy has largely been the purview of senior leadership; leaders set the agenda and lower levels get it done.? Value creation requires a vastly more integrated process of determination and implementation. By definition all members of the organization (and in particular the rank and file of faculty) offer key value delivery mechanisms.? Our organizational structures and practices are not optimized to take advantage of these value creation opportunities.? It is not that we have been stupid; the world has changed and it demands new approaches to address those changes.

Bottom line: value creation is now Job One for all of us, and leaders need to embrace how to develop this in the organization or face quickly losing competitive advantages that may have been built up over decades. A great place to start will be to re-focus from traditional strategic planning to an integrated focus on value proposition.

The Big Question | Thompson Patent Law ... because litigation ...

question markIn our house the day has finally come.? I imagine most if not all parents of children on the autism spectrum dread ?The Big Question.?

?Daddy, do I have autism??

My fear of this question began six years ago, within days of the diagnosis. When is the right time to tell her? What if she finds out from a bully who crushes her spirit on the playground because we chickened out and waited too long?

The big question popped while we read aloud a book written by Temple Grandin, a famous autistic professor at the University of Colorado. As we read the words to her (which she could read mostly by herself, by the way) she recognized similarities between Temple?s self-description and her own experience.

As it happened, we basically led her to it but left it up to her to formulate the self-awareness all on her own.? She was more ready to ask than I was to answer, even though I had six years to think about it.? I paused.

?Well, yes, dear.? That?s what the doctors said.? Everybody has different strengths, and you have some of the same strengths as Temple.?

Like most questions, I suspect she may very well have known the answer, but asked to see what we would do.? On reflection, she may have been operating on that higher plane that we simply don?t appreciate.
